Thanks for all the responses! I do have a rare disease on my side of the family that causes complete blindness. Many of my relatives are completly blind.

@mrbee: Interesting!

@Mrsbells: LOL

@Mrs.B: My brother is color blind. I've been told that greens look like pink to him sometimes. Red is gray, and I'm not sure about blue. Funny thing is he's a graphic designer and website designer and he makes some of the most beautiful sites I've ever seen! So fret not, even if your son does turn out to be color blind, it will take some adjusting but it'll be fine :)

Just make sure no one takes off the crayon wrappers when playing with him. My sister, who's a little younger than my brother (about fourteen months), noticed my brother was color blind before anyone else. Every time she would get mad at him, she'd take her vengeance on him by removing all the crayon wrappers! And the only thing that tipped off my mom that he was color blind (like her father, which is how it's passed down I think), was the fact that he said "Momma, watch out for that big grey truck!" The truck was red.

My DH is red/green color blind. It doesn't impact his daily life at all, except sometimes I will say something like oh, see that green thing, and he will say, oh I thought that was brown. Mainly he has trouble distinguishing between shades of things. Shades of green, shades of red, etc. There are different variations of color blind, but the red/green is pretty subtle. You would think he has trouble with traffic lights, but he doesn't at all. I'm sure taking your DS to the eye doctor will sort things out. It is definitely something he will adjust to, and he'll be ok!

My daughter is 4 and she still mixes up blue and yellow 90% of the time (well most of the time she calls yellow blue) and it worries me sometimes.

My coworker is color blind! Like, totally color blind. He sees the world in black and white and gray. It's very rare. I think something like 10% of men are affected by some color blindness, though.

Yup it's really rare for women to be color blind. I don't think it's generally a big deal though-- I've known a few friends here and there that were red/green color blind and other than a few quirks (clothes not matching, not being able to pick out the red crayon) it was more of a 'fun fact' kind of thing than an impairment. I guess it would rule out certain careers, like anything that requires perfect vision, artist, but I think it won't be a very big deal in the long run at all.

I don't have experience with it, but Mark Zuckerberg is red-green color blind! That's why Facebook is blue... it's the color he sees best:

@MamaMoose: lol! At least he has an excuse for not matching! :)

As @MamaMoose said, it's mainly men who are affected by color blindness...I would talk to his pedi. I don't think it really has much negative impact, although it can prevent him from becoming involved in certain professions that require him to be able to distinguish certain colors (like signal operators and things like that).

My understandig is women actually don't have color blindness (except for one very rare kind). Women are just carriers of the gene. So it's unlikely you'll find someone with personal experience here. But my brother is color blind. Honestly the only way it affects his life is sometimes his wife has to tell him to go change because his clothes don't match.

DS failed the eye exam at school a few months back and we have an appointment with a pediactric eye doctor in a few weeks. I've noticed he seems to always get blue, red, and green mixed up. He will say literally every other color and properly identify it except blue, green, and red. He is 4 so he should be able to identify the colors. I'm starting to get concerned. Does anyone have experience with being color blind? How did you know you were and what colors can't you see?
