@Bookworm: As of now I only have volunteer library experience, so I think I'll have to put in some time out of the home after I get my degree, but I hope to work part-time or full-time from home in the future!

I'll post the link on your wall. You have to be approved to join, but that's just to keep spammers out.

@Bookworm: In case you are ever interested, I'm part of a Yahoo group for SAH librarians, as well. :) Certain aspects of the work(cataloging, reference work, etc...) transfer over well to work at home opportunities!

Have you documented all of his nastiness? If you quit a job - and can show that you quit b/c they made the working environment impossible for you- you can get unemployment. He'll probably contest it though, which means a hearing.

This is a great thread. Some ideas from when I was a SAHM with 3 part time jobs:

1) I applied at stores and restaurants around our house (walkable in case Wagon Sr. needed the car while I was at work) and ended up working at Alfred Angelo (a bridal chain store). It was GREAT exercise and apparently I'm a good salesperson because I made a pretty good amount of money. You get paid hourly and then get commission on top of that. I was able to work 2 nights a week (6-8:30pm) and Saturdays (9:30am - 3pm).

2) I work in digital media so I emailed out to all my former colleagues letting them know I was available for part time freelance work. Some people had started their own companies so I did a little work for them like updating their facebook pages, market research, and client recordkeeping. I also did a little proofreading and photo editing work for people who were still working agencies and larger companies.

3) I started (but quickly quit because I decided to go back to work) at a job doing ad sales for a blog. It seemed like a pretty good gig and I was excited about it, but I landed my job a week after I got this gig.

4) Before I had Wagon Jr. I was a dog walker! It was great exercise while I was pregnant and got me out of the house every day. I LOVED this job. I worked with a woman who had a business and walked all the dogs in one region. I think I had 4-5 dogs and most of them were daily. The money for this is good too but you have to be able to work midday each day (dogs usually need a walk around midday) and I don't think it would be a good idea to do with a baby, even if you wore them (one of my dogs was very large, strong, and slightly aggressive-- I had to stop walking him when I was 7 months pregnant because I was too top-heavy and felt uncomfortable with him). But obviously if you could find clients with small dogs that are more easily managed, this could easily be done with a baby in tow!

I'm working my regular job weekends only to stay up to date in my profession and have just started independent sales with Premier Designs Jewlery. It's a Christian based company largely started to cater to mommies who want to stay at home. The nice thing about it for me, is I can schedule shows during the evening when DD is in bed or weekends for a few hours, but the most time I put in is 4 hours at a time. There is no minimum required sales so you could have no sales for a month and it doesn't effect anything. So far it helps us just bring in a little extra so far ive only done 1 show per month, and if I would want to work at it more I could make more. Plus I'm having a reason to dress nice and spend time with other ladies for a few hours at a time, which is a nice break!

It sounds like you don't NEED the cash, it's just a nice-to-have, and some months you will have more than enough. If you left your 1st job, could you spend more time promoting your freelance business? Would that bring in more income? Something to think about.

I do Search Engine Evaluation with Leap Force for a MAJOR search engine company ;) I make my own hours and can work as much or little as I want ( you do have to work a certain amount a month to remain "active"). The work is fun and very interesting.

It is computer intensive so you do need to be able to sit down and work in bursts (long or short-whatever you want) uninterrupted . However it is a 1099 which means your gonna want to make sure you have your home based office write offs lined up and set aside some money should you owe. If your good, after 6 months you can see around or above $20 an hour which is nice.

As another PP mentioned "Lion Bridge" and also "Appen Butler" are companies that do similar things with contracts with competitors.

Yep, I work for Bestmark like @cocobee ! National Shopping Service is another mystery shop company I've worked for. The downside is you have to log-in frequently to see new jobs and snag them - but it's pretty easy. Bestmark has had a lot of phone/internet shops lately that you don't even have to leave to do. Both sites get bigger "bonuses" on some of the shops as they take longer to fill - so if you're in an area where they don't have as many shoppers and are patient you can make more $. I have been doing 1 or 2 of the oil change shops each month and making between $30-$50 plus the free oil change. Certainly wouldn't rely on it, but it helps!

Check out WAHM.com and http://realwaystoearnmoneyonline.com/ . It sounds like your best bet might be to expand your freelance writing/editing through Odesk or Elance or another writing site, or creating a website and trying to find private work.

Good luck!

aww honey I'm so sorry :(:(

Have you considered what I did; doing a nannying job just 1-2x a week that allows you to bring Willa with you? I don't know if you'd enjoy that but you could make $10-$15/hour depending on experience, # of kids/hours etc... Something to consider.

My aunt worked for a few companies that were WAH jobs. One was Lionbridge and it was ok, not great, but a good paying job for at home, I think it pays up to $14-$15/hour; but you have the flexibility to set your own hours and work however much you want; you are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week. It is an internet rating service. When my aunt explained it, it sounded really intriguing. Requires lots of internet screen time.

Leapforce is another one my aunt recommended, though she hadn't worked for them personally, her friend did. Not sure exactly what that one is though it may be similar to Lionbridge.

And lastly, VIPDesk is another that works from home. You get hired through the company and then outsourced to a client of theres; some clients have been Eddie Bauer; you then work as a customer service rep directly from home. You have more set hours though, and you have to work in a quiet, private environment (home office) and it requires a certain office setup. So it would be harder to do at home unless you had some type of childcare set up.

Oh and one other option, though again, harder to do with a baby; is to do some secret shopper work. I did that while pregnant and liked it. It doesn't make a ton of money, but you get to choose the "jobs" you want to perform and it takes very little time. I mostly did restaurant jobs and they were usually only reimbursement jobs - but that mean DH and I got to go to lunch/dinner for free :) that was nice.

There are also auto jobs, such as oil changes, car sales, banks and gyms - you go as a "potential customer" then later fill out a survey based on your experience. I thought it was fun, but most of them you can't do with a baby (each job is different and will specify whether or not children are allowed). The company I worked with was Bestmark and I had a positive experience with them.

Good luck!!

I had a friend that quit her job even though they needed the money. They figured out they were really only $300 shirt each month with what they would save from not doing day care and driving, etc. she said that they make it work and she is so much happier and that she would do it again on a heartbeat. They were able to save and pay off a car and credit card.

So, I technically work two jobs.
1) as a wine bar/ coffee shop "manger." I used to have a lot more responsibilities before I left because of bed rest/maternity leave, but now that I am back I pretty much only write the schedule and then take a lot of crap from everyone.

2) a freelance writer/editor. If this job was reliable, it would be my only one. However, some months I have four jobs lined up and sometimes I will go months and months without a client.

My first job (and main source of income) has always brought me nothing but stress. My boss (the owner) is extremely flaky, dishonest, two-faced, and the complete opposite of business-savvy. He says one thing to me, but then goes and says something different to another employee because he wants to be on everyone's side. Because of this, there is constantly some sort of drama going on at work. It brings nothing but stress and I can't take working with the catty employees (or owner) anymore. I have worked for him for years so there have been many conversations, many meetings, but nothing has changed whatsoever. He is extremely hard to work for. I am the only person who has stuck it out this long.... most people quit within months.

I would quit without any qualms (and without writing a long-winded HB post) if we didn't NEED the money. So I am wondering if you guys have any advice.

I don't need to make much money. My DH's income covers all the bills, so what I will be making will help pay off student loans/medical bills/go into savings. So even $1,000 a month makes a difference.

Those who work from home, what do you do? I would love to work from home full time since leaving my five-month old makes me so sad!

Would you quit? What other jobs would you look for? I don't really know what to do.
