@Mrs. Bee: Ugh! I'm so sorry!! When I had gallbladder issues, my first thought was an ulcer (gnawing pain), but it was up under my right ribs (several inches under me boobs). It sounds like treatment for an ulcer is much friendlier. Hope it's better soon! :)

@TravelBee: i think caffeine may have been the culprit for me. i normally don't consume caffeine but have been daily lately. also been drinking too much!

@Mrs. Jacks: @TravelBee: thanks! my doctor called me back yesterday and told me to take double the dose of prilosec, which was what finally helped.

i tried everything! cut out caffeine/alchohol/processed foods, ate kefir, sauerkraut, aloe juice, ginger tea, vitamin d, probiotics, tums, maalox, zantac... but once I took that second prilosec i finally got some relief.

she told me to go see a gi doc since they would have to run tests and possibly do an endoscopy. was sad i didn't get to eat thanksgiving dinner and had to leave our friendsgiving early, but am feeling better today!

@Mrs. Bee: I'm going through this right now as well. Aloe Vera seems to help. I'm also taking probiotic supplements. It's much better now especially since I've cut the caffeine.

@Mrs. Bee: I'm just seeing this now! I hope things were tolerable yesterday.

Most providers would want to see you in before prescribing but given that you were infected before, some might call it "incomplete treatment" and just call it in (of course depending on a variety of factors). A phone call to discuss symptoms might not hurt.

One thing to note is that they'll want you off acid suppression to do testing, so coordinate carefully so that you don't suffer needlessly!

@Mrs. Bee: I know that here you need to be tested for H.Pylori (its a breath and sputum test) before they will prescribe the antibiotics, but I'm not sure about in the states. When you got your ulcer treated last time, was it antibiotics or just a symptom treater?

@Mrs. Jacks: should i call my doctor and ask her to prescribe antibiotics? i wasn't sure if she would just do that over the phone without an exam. i thought i would wait until tomorrow but it is getting too painful and i had to leave thanksgiving dinner!

You can eat and treat to minimise symptoms, but if you've got an ulcer the only thing that will fix it is antibiotics. Probiotics whilst on antibiotics are obviously a great idea!

basically everyone in our family has had a stomach ulcer, caused by helicobacter pylori. one great big box of antibiotics to clear it up and some nexium too.

It helps to take the antibiotics to get rid of the bacteria.

@Mrs. Bee: oh no, hope you get better soon. My SIL drinks a teaspoon of turmeric mixed with a teaspoon of honey and warm water daily. It has helped her with her ulcer. Drink it with a straw and brush your teeth afterwards because it can stain your teeth.

I'm not sure how correct this info is, but I thought I remeber my DR telling me it is caused by a bacteria (h pylori?) and you need antibiotics to clear it up...

I hope you feel better soon!

I've had one in the past and had to take some prescription medication to clear it up. It took me a little while to figure out what I had though.

Now I've that same burning hunger feeling since last night. They can be treated at home so I'm going on a whole diet, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and taking probiotics. Anything else work for you?
