I say switch. I don't think it's a big deal. Doctors are service providers, granted they are providers that went to school for many years but if I've learned anything since having kids is that you have to be your own (and their) advocate and look out for whatever you think is in your best interest. If it's not a good fit and there's no pressing reason to stay with her then you should just switch.

@Mrs Green Grass: My thought is...if there's something that just doesn't feel right, then it doesn't hurt to switch. You need to feel comfortable. I know you trust her, but you need to feel comfortable asking the questions you want/need to ask.

I think I'll ask our OT if she recommends anyone that specializes in feeding issues. There is nothing wrong with her as a person; friendly, definitely knows us (we go almost monthly)...it's just not the right fit.

We're switching for similar reasons. I'm sick of going in feeling like I'm more informed than the doctor. I also feel like she doesn't even pretend to remember us or LO. It's more bad service really, and the desk staff is abysmal. No advice on switching because we're still in the middle of it but I agree that if there's anything you're not happy with just switch. I figure we'll be going there for 15 or 16 years, I shouldn't dread it.

@Mrs Green Grass: I switched ped's too, we were using the one from the hospital for the first year. He was close, to home, convenient had a gorgeous office...He was so impersonal, had to look at the chart for names, was very quick and to the point. You'd go there and feel like they were herding cattle, quantity over quality. I mentioned that to my friend and she recommended her pediatrician which is not close or convenient but he's awesome!

@Mrs Green Grass: I scheduled the next appointment with a clinic that I used to go to when I was younger (between 14 and 18) in the Children's hospital. The doctor I met with that day and I clicked really well so I just asked if she could be my pediatrician from now on. She said sure. When my next one came along, I just kept the same doctor. Now she sees both of my kids :)

So no but I tried her out first, if that makes sense.

i switched doctors for a similar reason. i don't have a preemie, but regarding solids, i definitely felt that i was more informed than my ped. She actually told me that at six months he had already (as in before 6 months) not been getting enough calories from breastmilk and i should have started solids (specifically rice cereal) at 4 months! um, have you not seen the WHO remcommendation to EBF for 6 months?! that was my final straw as i had issues before and realized i had been discounting her advice on other things as well. so i thought why am i seeing a doctor who i don't listen to? I had some issues with breastfeeding as well and she had previously told me it was all him having gas. i went to a new doc who has a good reputation for being "current" and he gave 2 little tips on BFing that changed my entire BFing relationship for the better! he also told me to exactly what i already thought/researched about solids. I feel confident asking him questions now and taking his advice. the way it should be when you see a doctor!

so basically i think you should probably listen to your gut feeling. it can make a drastic difference IMO.

Could you talk to the neonatologist that you worked with and see who he recommends? Surely he knows someone who has more experience with preemies!

@Mrs Green Grass: OK, to be honest. I never ask our pediatrtician about solids, sleep, nap advice. I go to him for medical advice and that's it. I think with solids, sleep and naps there are SO many schools of thought I don't have to agree with him. Even on medical advice I still do my own research sometimes. ie He reco's Tylenol but we give ibuprofen solely. But I do trust him and I know they are all great with her so we stay. Although I came reallyclose to firing them when she was around one.

@locavore_mama: I do trust her. I think she's a good doctor....but just not necessarily up to date on the most current thinking.

@looch: If I change, I'll probably go to a different location within the same system because I don't like awkwardness. Also this location is super old and there are many brand new buildings that aren't much further. Dozens of other doctors, just don't know who is taking patients.

@NaturallyCathy: Did you interview the next one? I'm afraid I'll switch and be equally picky. Maybe I'm just hard to please?

I've had to switch doctors because I just wasn't feeling like the doctor was listening to me before. The pediatrician was great but she was always in a hurry to see other patients so she would do a cursory. If I actually stopped and asked her questions, she seemed able and competent to answer them, was friendly - but I still didn't feel like she knew me or my kids. The nursing staff felt closer to me than the doctor did! So I switched and am glad I did! If it's just not working for you, switch hon. The doc won't remember.

Do you just want to change doctors within the practice, or the practice althogether?

I am in this same situation right now, and I am kind of stuck. We had a wonderful ped, but he left the practice and now we're with the Managing Partner and she's terrible...good doctor, but not kind and gentle like the other ped.

I plan to switch to someone else in the practice.

@Mrs Green Grass: I'm not familiar with the actual vs adjusted age. But I would think that is a huge deal with preemies and their development? I think that is a big "standard of care" mess up on her part!

I think if this was my PCP and I just did not "jive" or feel comfortable with them I would switch. Do you trust her? If you can't then absolutely switch, imo.

My lo was born at 25 weeks, so I wanted a Pediatrician who also worked in the NICU. I ended up going to the one that my favorite nurse also went to. But I'm just not feeling it. She's nice. But I don't feel like I ask can her much because it seems like I'm more informed on solids and things like that. And at times, it doesn't seem like she remembers that he's a 25 weeker She knows for sure, but I have done everything by his adjusted age and she's all of a sudden going by his actual age. He's 11 months actual and 7 1/2 adjusted which is a huge difference!

She said yesterday that he should be getting most of his calories from solids now. But we only started 2 months ago! He's making definite progress, but he's not ready for finger foods.

Should I switch if it's really just because of a feeling, not a poor standard of care? How do I go about it? I'm a major health group with lots of doctors and locations.
