Like you, I didn't see the reason why I needed to be banished to a back bedroom in my own how so I was free to nurse in front of people. I've even pumped (with a cover on) with family around.

So yes, I think I have scarred a few people but I also would like to think that I've opened a few minds to how easy nice and "non crunchy" breastfeeding in public can be.

@blackbird: I was wondering about the warning too, although when I've been around my sister or friends BFing, it was always obvious what they were about to do anyway (getting the baby set up, etc). I wouldn't mind at all, but so far friends have always put the cover on, my sister didn't care, but we are sisters.
When the mom is getting set up, I always look away to give them privacy, but I hope it doesn't look like I'm grossed out or anything. If anything, I want to get a good look since I'll be there myself soon enough, but that seems creepy...

I always warn people I'm going to nurse if there's just a few of us. And if it's a party or something where there's a lot of people, I'll go to a quiet spot away from other people (more because it distracts the baby than because I'm worried about what other people think!)

I always feel like there's a balance between being all "in-your-face" about breastfeeding and hiding it away. I'm not shy about it, and nurse in public when necessary, but I try to be polite.

Did you warn her before you whipped it out? A friend of mine would warn me, so I knew what to expect. I get shocked when anyone doesn't give me a heads up! it's just always kind of surprising and uncomfortable

My in laws are here, and there's no way I'm pulling out the boob in front of them! Luckily, I normally fed him in a room upstairs anyways.

I fed in front of both of my younger sisters and I'm sure if a friend (probably female only, lol) was here I wouldn't be worried about feeding in front of them. Just the in laws makes me feel pretty awkward!

I always use a cover or go in another room, but it gets really old and I'm tired of doing it. It would be easier, but I just can't bring myself to just whip out my boob!

I already get so engorged if I don't feed him about every two hours during the day at least, I don't care who is over-they are in danger of seeing boobs!

I'm the first among many of my friends, so it is possible that I've surprised them, but I use a cover. Especially when LO was really young and would sleep anywhere we were still going to parties and such. I think it is still something that makes other peoples' wheels turn if they haven't been around it before, but I am proud of promoting breastfeeding in public by having done that in front of so many friends.

Hahaha!

I kind of had my FiL worried when our LO was born. We were at their place, and I had a nursing cover, but I don't think he knew that. We were all in the kitchen and I was saying I was going to nurse the baby and he booked it out of there. I think he was worried he was going to see my boobs. I thought it was hilarious.

I've decided that I am going to keep our household schedule for the time being if we have company. No more hiding when I have to feed M or if I have to pump. So, today a friend of mine came over. She's my age but she's single and hasn't really been around any other moms much. Halfway through her visit, I moved to the other couch in the room and took the boppy with me. She asked what the boppy was and as I was describing it, I plopped M on it, whipped out my boob and started feeding her. My friend's eyes went so wide. It was hilarious. I don't think she saw any of the major goods but she was a bit shocked that I just pulled it out in front of her. Thankfully I was wearing a tank that pulls to the side so I wasn't completely baring it all for her. Funny...she started to get ready to leave towards the end of our nursing session. :)

Has anyone else shocked their friends or family by breastfeeding in front of them?
