Haven't read the other comments. This happened to me a couple of winters ago. It was from water getting trapped between my ring and finger. If I remember to take my ring off to shower, do dishes etc then I'm fine.

Mine does this too, but I have 14k white gold.

I think it's a moisture getting trapped thing because it doesn't happen if I take my rings off regularly.

I get this several times a winter from excessive hand washing. Usually if I use gentle/non-lathering soap, moisturize, and don't wear my rings for a few days it will clear up.

DH got that too and stopped wearing his ring and all watches! I'm going to tell him @mediagirl: recs, though he HATES moisturizer.

My friend went through this, I think her was related to the skin never getting dry after she washed her hands. (i.e. the ring was trapping moisture) She tried to do a better job of drying and putting lotion on to keep skin moisturized and she's good to go now!

I'm with those that say it's just an overwashing/water buildup thing. I was just in with DH because he was/is having ring issues with his (white gold), and they said if it is NOT going all the way around the finger (top and bottom), it's definitely just a water/moisture/product build-up kind of thing--also, with platinum, you really shouldn't have any issues with it at all (unless like you said, there was for some reason something else mixed in with it?!).

DH actually IS allergic to his, and it will start like the picture @mediagirl: posted, but then it will start to discolor to a greenish color, and then the skin will "die" off and flake off. It's sick. And as mentioned, it goes all around the entirety of his finger. We were told our only real option is to upgrade to platinum...which won't be happening any time soon! ;)

Sometimes the hair product I use makes my ring finger do that. Especially morocco oil. I have to make sure I have my ring off while applying products then wash my hands real good afterwards.

This has happened to me twice, mine are platinum too. I suffered for a few weeks, using over the counter cortosone, but when I finally went to the derm she gave me some samples of a strong cortosone cream and it cleared right up within a few short days! She said it is from water/soap getting under your ring and rub away the natural oils on your skin and inflame it. She also told me I should take my rings off every single time I wash my hands so I can dry them thoroughly. Its a pain, but it becomes habit. I also just leave my ring in a dish whenever I'm home since that's when I wash the most.

OMG, this is me for the last few months. *big sigh of relief*
I thought i was the only one. Mine was super red. I had to put polysporin on at one point.

@mediagirl: I feel very unmarried without my ring too. I've had to resort to wearing it around a chain, but i would like to wear my wedding band thank you very much!

@mrsjyw: I have that right now on one side of my finger. My rings are white gold. I'm either blaming hormones, or thinking I might have got something under there that irritated the skin. (I don't take my rings off when I wash my hands). I left them off for a day and it's SO much better.

Me too! After LO was born I was constantly washing bottles and cleaning my hands. I developed dry spots and haven't worn my ring in the past 2 years. I'm not very good about moisturizing though. I had a flare up earlier this week and have been using Vaseline a few times a day after I wash my hands. It has helped a lot.

@mrsjyw: agree with what @mediagirl: says...could be a skin reaction but not necessarily an allergy.

This happened to me a few winters ago (I have super sensitive skin and my rings are platinum). I used my eczema ointment on my finger and didn't wear my rings for a few days and it healed and I haven't had any issues since then. I thought it was an allergic reaction too and was so sad but it was like an eczema flare up on my finger. Hopefully it clears up for you soon! Maybe try some hydrocortisone cream for a few days and make sure to keep it hydrated but dry...and don't wear your ring for a few days until it's all cleared up and healed. Good luck!

I was allergic to my gold promise ring, but haven't had any issues with my platinum e-ring or wedding ring. I think it's pretty unusual to be allergic to platinum, but I could be wrong. Do you dry underneath it thoroughly after washing your hands? I know soap or hand sanitizer can build up underneath and irritate your finger. Getting it cleaned is a great first step and maybe ask your jeweler for other suggestions?

@mrsjyw: my dermatologist said it was actually a type of psoriasis. She said to keep it moist, lotion morning, mid day and at night. Keep your hands moist and keep your rings off until it heals. Then, take them off when you sleep. If I forget to take mine off to sleep, I end up with this. It's so annoying, half the time I'm walking around unmarried because of it!!

ETA: Mine are platinum, as well.

:( :( SERIOUSLY!!!

my ring finger was itchy the other day, and i noticed at night (i take my rings off after work usually) that there were these red/pink ish dry marks that looked kind of like burn marks healing.

upon Dr Googling, I find out that ring dermatitis is pretty common and seriously... i may have developed an allergy!

Rings are platinum, which is a rare allergy tho? I'm going without it until it heals, and getting it cleaned and hope that it wont' come back!!

Anyway, I digress. I'm just complaining about "firstworldprobs"
