My stylist retired after 20 years, and she was giving me some tips for finding a new stylist. She said to find a salon that lets it's stylists take courses, and compete in hair competitions. She also suggested going for a blow-out first as kind of a trial run.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I actually had the plan of going to a recommended stylist, but that stylist left the salon - so me and my friend are both in need of a new stylist. I would also like some place close to home if possible, so I was thinking I'd try a place that's within walking distance.

Maybe I should mention on the phone that I'm not totally sure if the style I want will suit me and my hair type. Maybe then the person answering the phone could pair me up with someone who's comfortable giving advice and opinions?

@LindsayLou: Sounds just like my hair! I feel like I have next to know options for styling it so I want to have a nice cut to at least give it some style. That is good advice, thanks.

I found a salon that got great reviews, and when I called I described my hair type (similar to @MaryM's) and asked who they would recommend. I loved my stylist, but unfortunately he recently moved to a different salon that's just too far away from me. I tried someone else at the same salon but wasn't thrilled. A new salon just opened really close to my house and is getting rave reviews, so I'm giving them a try later this week...fingers crossed... It really is trial and error, which is a little nerve-wracking.

As far as actual styles, and breaking out of a rut, definitely bring pictures of things you like and things you don't, but also ask the stylist what they recommend for your hair type, face shape, etc. a good stylist will spend some time examining your hair and will let you know whether the styles you like are suitable and offer alternatives if they aren't.

I get my hair cut by a man with curly hair, he wears it in a pony tail, so I don't at all go by trying to find someone that has hair similar to mine. I like to know where they've trained, that makes a difference, not all stylists are created equal.

I got my recommendation from a girl I used to work with and it was amazing. So I definitely think you should look around and see what types of hair are out there similar to yours and ask people about their stylists.

I would also get a recommendation. I've even asked women I see on the street whose hair I liked.

Like @LindsayLou: suggested, I've walked into a salon just to see if there was a stylist with curly hair to request she cut my hair. I've also found recommendations online by searching my hair type + city and this has worked well from the reviews I found. I definitely have had stylists tell me a particular style wouldn't work for my hair. Good luck!

I have similar hair. Very fine, little body, prone to tangles and wisps. It also has a weird growth pattern, so one side always looks a bit different. I would try and find a recommendation for a stylist, go in with some pictures, and ask the stylist what she thinks would work with your hair. My mom was a hairstylist for years, and says she always hated when other stylists would give someone a requested haircut that totally wouldn't work with their hair. She also recommends finding a stylist who has similar hair to yours.

@MaryM: agree, this is exactly how I've found every stylist I ever liked. I've even asked strangers in stores with similar hair to mine where they've gone.
@Shizaz: I think most stylists would be honest about something not working for you. The best results I've had have been from going to other people's recommended stylists and saying "I loved what you did for xxxx, can you do that for me but a couple inches longer"--that kind of thing.

Is there someone with hair similar to yours that you could get a reference from? I've had good luck doing that for the last two stylists I used.

I have thick wavy/not quite curly hair and can end up with a mushroom shaped head if people don't know what they're doing. So I've asked coworkers with nice styles where they go.

I feel like I'm in a hair rut. I've been getting the same haircut for 20 years. It's just straight with a few layers around my face. I usually get it cut to my shoulders and then it grows out a few inches, and then I get it cut again, the same way.

I had a bad experience once and I feel like it's made me so hesitant on going now. Not to mention I feel like my hair is weird and stubborn. It's is super fine, which makes it hard to style (It will not hold a curl) and I have a lot of cowlicks (I get comments on that almost every time I go to a salon).

Anyway, I want to find a stylist and stick with them. I usually just go to random salons that will take walk-ins. But I'm still scared about them messing up my hair.

I also want a change now. But that scares me even more. If I go in with pictures, and if I ask them if it would look good on me, would they be honest? If I show them a picture of a similar hairstyle that I DON'T like, would this help?

I tried to be brave last time, went in with a picture, and my hair looked nothing like it afterwards. I didn't like the stylist so I just left instead of having her charge me another $15 to style it. I doubt it would have looked anything like I wanted it to anyway.
