well it depends on what type of phone you have and what service provider but after the update there are differences in the way the phone runs, and the whole interface looks different with an updated keyboard for texting. You would notice if you got the update because you have to agree to run it.
if you go to your settings and look under the "about phone" section it should tell you what version of android and the "build number" you are running. Mine is currently andriond 2.3.6 and the build number Gingerbread.EL29, the newest one is Icecream sandwich and I really cant wait to get it since DH has it and his phone runs better than mine now.

I have the new ice cream sandwich platform and it's been doing great for me so far. I did have a problem with it disconnecting from the network, but that's because it was set up to use the 4G connection. Once I switched it to use the 3G connection, it's been fine.

My phone did shut off one time and didn't come back up a couple weeks ago. When I took it in they said they ran an update for it, and it's been fine ever since.

If you have an android phone are you running the new Icecream sandwich version? Its really annoying because DH got it on his phone and I didnt get the update and we are on the same plan! Anyway I spoke to the service provider and they said a lot of peoples phones crashed so they are holding off and sending out the update later. Cant wait!
