You can use egg whites from the carton. They have been pasteurized!

Congrats!

@Dandelion: @Mae: @fancyfunction: @Anagram: thanks ladies! Unfortunately for the party, I went in to labor 3 days beforehand (3 weeks early!)! But at least I have a sweet little girl instead of sweet little gingerbread people.

@fancyfunction: agree! I've used just powdered sugar and a little milk. The consistency is thin but it hardens to coat sugar cookies well. It's the only icing is use for rolled dough cookies cut into shapes because it doesn't cover up the shape.

You can even do just powdered sugar, water and a little milk. It hardens nicely too so cookies won't stick to each other.

Same as Dandelion. I do egg in whipped icings for cakes, but for cookies I stick to a more traditional buttercream.

I've always just used powdered sugar, butter, vanilla and milk in my icing for cookies. I've never put eggs in my icing.

We are going to a toddler holiday party next week and I am making cookies/frosting so that the kids can decorate. I haven't been able to find a good icing recipe though. Most recipes call for Royal Icing, which uses egg whites or powdered egg whites (which I can't find here), and since there will be pregnant moms and very young children, I don't want to use raw egg whites. Any suggestions (with links!) for good cookie decorating icing?
