My aunt and uncle live there and it's such a nice spot to be able to getaway to!</p> <p>If you plan on doing the Mansions; my favorite is Marble House. The Breakers is the largerst, but it's a little too-too - while Marble House just blows me away.</p> <p>I like the bar Fluke, which is on the wharf so you can watch the sailboats. They have a good selection of cocktails. </p> <p>I’ve never had an amazing meal in Newport, but most places we’re tried have been fine; so maybe someone else has some suggestions on where to eat. </p> <p>You should check out the historical society Museum Shops; they have a nice selection of home goods, books and things. It was fine for me as a day trip but certainly not a place I'd make a getaway destination (esp being that you're coming from another big city like I was).<br /> I would've also recommended Charleston and Savannah but they are prob a little hot and touristy in Aug... I've been to Nantucket so that's also a great pick. Like someone else said, a few airlines do fly there. Its so pretty and has good food. But tend to be expensive in summer as it's high season obviously. My final choice is Portland! I think August is prime lobster season and there are soooo many good restaurants and cute shops. Very scenic as well.
