Olive the honey badger doesn't care!! This made my week.

I'd recommend hiring entertainment! I've been to parties with a balloon twister, face painter, magician, etc but I think the best was a kids music performer. I think kids parties are best when they can either run around nonstop or be totally entranced by something they don't see in everyday life.

I would think about hiring someone to entertain the kids, whether it be an entertainer or babysitter.

Ilana from MommyShorts used this vendor:
http://www.pennyandthepuppettes.com/
http://www.mommyshorts.com/2012/12/its-a-3rd-birthday-miracle.html

Other suggestions would be magician, animal/reptile show, face painting. If you want to be able to relax, i'd definitely look into hiring a babysitter so that the kids can do activities (without the parents having to supervise).

What about bringing in an entertainer? Sing along guitar player or puppet show. That would occupy the kids for at least 45min?

No ideas, but just wanted to say our local breweries have kids sections. So not weird to me at all!

Genius. Do you have a trusted babysitter or friend who could lead/supervise the games? That could really maximize fun for adults and kids both.

Oh this sounds cool. Maybe you are already paying a pretty penny for the space, but I would think about getting a magician to entertain the kids or an artist to do projects with them and oversee. Or if you're setting up activities you could hire a babysitter (or 2) to keep an eye on the kids so the adults can chill a little.

@matador84: I like the dress up/costume idea, and you could even set up a little photo booth.

We had a children's table at our wedding and it was a huge hit. We had everything from fun art projects (I bought some Melissa and Doug kits), games, bean bag toss, puzzles, toys, musical instruments, the works. The art projects were the most popular by far. (We also made sure that all the paint/crayons were completely washable and water soluble, since kids tend to wear "nicer" clothes to parties.)

@Mrs. Bee: I don't think it's strange at all to have it in a bar, given where you live. I have been to 4 1st birthdays in my neighborhood and 3(!) were in a bar. That's just how my mommy group rolls.

So our kiddos are way younger, but 1 party was at the Biergarten on a Sunday when they already have a kids band playing, so that was the "activity". Another one was at a pub that had a back room and the parents had a local kids performer come and sing funny songs (and bring their bag full of scarves, shakers, etc. that went with each song).

You could also do a parent-child photo scavenger hunt, depending on the bar?

This doesn't seem odd to me at all. I totally know what you're saying...a lot of the bars in my old neighborhood used to do baby showers and bridal showers during the day! I can't see how a kid's party would be that much different.

Definitely agree with art stations and maybe something like pin the tail on the donkey? There would definitely be wall space/getting dizzy room for it.

I would totally have One of the kids bdays at a bar. I've actually thought about having it at a wine bistro here! Could you do a dress up/costume area? Art area?

I'm thinking about having Olive's 3rd birthday at a bar! Hear me out... we went to one recently where a bar closes and hosts birthdays during the daytime so they had a bunch of toys. But then they also served awesome food and alcohol so the adults had fun too! It was one of the best kids' birthdays I've been to.

So since Olive the honeybadger doesn't really care what we do for her birthday, I wanted to have one at a bar. Some of my friends I only see on special occasions and our kids' birthdays, and everyone is so busy wrangling their kids that the adults never get to talk. I wanted the adults to have fun too and not just have a kids' birthday.

I've been looking into venues and there are a ton of options locally.

What are some games/activities that could keep the kids happy/occupied without a ton of adult supervision/interaction so adults could relax a bit too?
