We fly every 2 months with our 20 month old and what works well for us is bubble stickers from the dollar store he sticks onto paper, flap books, snacks, and he LOVES a balloon popping app I put on my android phone. If all else fails, he watches Elmo with the sound off.

We just flew 19 hours with 2 connections with our two LOs and DD is 20mo. She was a lap child. I had two different sets of this Melissa and Doug paint set http://www.melissaanddoug.com/water-wow-travel-books-animals
Sticker books, normal books, plain sheets of paper with markers, a few small plastic animal toys, and the iPad with videos and the back of the seat screen with movies. We had a headphone splitter so both LOs could watch the same video at the same time. I also had tons of snacks. Our longest flight was 10 hours and it definitely dragged by, but both kids were really good and no one screamed!

We had a lot of success with those window gel clings. Started out sticking them to the tray and then eventually tore them apart.

I also wrapped everything that I brought for her like it was a present. Just the idea that it was a present and the extra time it took to unwrap each item bought us a lot of time and gave her more excitement.

@PurplePeony: yeah my old iPhone is C's now- I got a special cover for it so she doesn't think she can watch videos on my new phone, and I only take it out for things like doctors appts (mine, where I need her to sit still) or planes. It's slow as anything but can play a downloaded video.

@Foodnerd81: oh, good call. My old work phone is an android but maybe I can download some videos to that. I'm not allowed to take my active work phone abroad and it's the one I use 90% of the time for anything except talking to friends and family (hence why I don't care to get a new personal phone just yet) but I forgot that old phones can sometimes be used as mini-tablets without the phone service. I'll have to check that out.

@PinkElephant: last time we flew, I cut a slit in the top of a old PB jar and made a bunch of cardboard shapes that she could put through the slit. For good measure, I cut some bits of Velcro and put them around the outside of the jar and on the backs of the shapes so she can stick them on there. It was a hit, in fact she still plays with it! I'll have to find another to stuff full of things.

Post-it notes. Cheap and easy to clean up and she played with them for a long time...

Our best bet was downloading a movie on the iPad & kid-friendly head phones. That and snacks.

@PurplePeony: We have an upcoming flight with our toddler. Here are our plans -

-run her up and down the aisles of the airport before boarding
-try to time her meals so she'll eat a meal or big snack on the plane, and make it something that takes a while to eat but isn't too messy - I'm thinking string cheese she can pull apart, strawberries cut into really small pieces, etc.
-a few brand new books with a lot of flaps to open like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0794429017/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2/181-1530517-0584117?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_r=1HQPEMMTE7Z430M29AK0&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=1944687702&pf_rd_i=B001O0D0TI
-those invisible ink booklets are also great plane activities because they take forever but aren't messy: http://www.amazon.com/Frozen-Activities-Sisters-Forever-Colors/dp/B00GGM1L9K/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1438883628&sr=8-17&keywords=invisible+ink

We loved blue painters tape- keep sticking it to the tray table and LO will pull it off... at least it kept my DD occupied when we flew with her at 18 months. Now that she's older, we watch DVDs.

Do you know anyone who has an old iPhone or iPod that you could borrow? You can still use them with wifi to download some videos with iTunes and then just turn the wifi off. I try to limit screen time but desperate times!

Take a clean, empty plastic jar (something clear like a peanut butter jar works great). Stuff it full of little toys like matchbox cars, finger puppets, ribbons, fabric scraps, Pom poms, etc. Fun for in and out play and fidgety little fingers. Bobis points if you can use items you don't care about losing, so it doesn't matter if items fall between seats or get left behind.

DD and I are going to be making a loooong (17-hour including a layover) trip soon. Unfortunately, DH has to travel earlier than us and I'm pretty nervous about doing this long a trip solo. We've done this same trip before with DH and I've done cross-country a couple times -- but DD was younger and less active then. I'm just not sure how to keep her entertained because she doesn't really play with toys -- she just cruises around, dances, jumps, pushes her doll stroller, etc. she has gotten into doing art so we'll bring crayons and stuff... We don't do screen time, and though I'm not opposed to bribing her with it on the plane, DH will have the iPad and my phone is ancient, the screen is cracked, and the headphone jack is broken. I have been putting off getting a new one, though, and really don't want to spend the money now. I know each seat on the plane has a TV screen but we're traveling with her carseat and I was planning to RF it...not sure if she'll consent to sit in it much anyway. Hopefully I'll be able to get her to sleep at least part of the time.

Basically, I just need someone to talk me down off the ledge and give me some ideas! This trip was so much easier last year when she wasn't mobile and we had DH with us. Thank goodness we're meeting up with him there and he's coming back with us.
