I can’t really help my first grader with her work while I work, so I just make sure she uses head phones and so I don’t get interrupted I tell her that she needs to get up and lock herself in another room if her sister is being too disruptive.

@HappyBaker: baby bum is the one show my toddler likes ... it is just kind of mesmerizing. The songs are always stuck in my head :silly:

My random piece of advice for a sandbox is to never let him wear shorts/pants with pockets out there. That is how we get the biggest mess, especially because it comes out at an unexpected later time (usually when he is climbing on our bed or something ... ) so I try to mandate he wear “sandbox shorts” which is just pj pants or shorts. Then at least you have a hope of brushing it off near the door!

Great ideas thank you so much everyone!!

@bhbee: I hadn’t heard of Baby Bum but just looked it up, he so far doesn’t want to watch anything but I’m giving this a shot! Also he loves/d the sandbox at the park so I might figure out how to make that happen! I just got a cordless Dyson so sand everywhere doesn’t scare me haha.

Giant sheets of paper taped all over a wall so he can color or draw? This is tough. I'll keep thinking!

Anywhere you could put a sandbox and keep an eye on him while the big kids do school? My wild child loved (actually still loves at 5) the sandbox and it was one thing that really held his attention for longer periods. We have a plastic one that’s not that big but it does the trick!

I have a 21 month old and he is insane. I feel you. Haha. Nothing keeps his attention. He loves to climb, dump, destroy.

I wish my 18 month old would sit in front of a screen right now! Literally nothing is guaranteed to hold his attention so DH and I have to try and split up the boys to get anything done.

Ymmv but my 20 month old loves to take apart (big kid) Legos, and/or put them in a bag/box and take them out. I think the major appeal is that she’s not really supposed to have them, but she doesn’t eat them and I try to give her things with bigger pieces.

Also color wonder helps, she feels like she is being big with school then too (high chair only for art to contain it). But she screeches every time she needs a new marker opened. If you can find a big box (like 96) crayons that keeps her busy a while too just taking them out and putting them back. Of course sometimes she dumps them all.

But yeah she screamed the entire time my big two were trying to do school today and I eventually let her watch Baby Bum so we could get it done. Some days that’s all I’ve got.

One of the best ways I’ve found to keep my just turned 3 year old occupied is the virtual storytimes that lots of people are doing. Lately we’ve been watching the ones on Penguin Kids Facebook page. It is screen time, but it feels different to me since it’s literally a person reading a book aloud.

Has anyone found good ways to keep your toddler entertained while you work with your older kids? Water play with a big bowl worked for a few weeks but he’s over it now. He just turned 2 and basically just yells to get our attention while we’re trying to do “school”, driving my older two crazy! We’re shooting for less than 2 hours a day so I just need a few new ideas to keep him calm and happy! I can’t do school during his nap because I’m trying to also WFH full time. (Keyword: trying)
