@winniebee: That's pretty much K's schedule now. She's up by 5:30 the latest but can now hold out till almost 11:30. The later she sleeps the longer she sleeps!

20 months over here and we still have some 2 nap days. My ped said its still very normal and OK if he seems like he needs it that day.

MOST days we do 1 nap. Some days we do the exact 2 nap schedule you mentioned, but bedtime is rarely past 7:30. (Partly because he can't handle it, partly because I can't handle it. Lol)

BUT if we get into that early wake up rut like you mentioned, and I want to get back to 1 nap, I will tend to do a later morning nap (like 11) and he'll wake up at 1 or so and then we do earlier bedtim instead of trying to force another nap. So while we normally do 7/7:30 bedtime, we'll do 6:30. At that point he's been up a long time and is tired enough for it, and he still wakes up at a normal-ish time.
I try to never do more than 5/5.5 hours awake at a time.

Example:
Wake up at 6am (early for him)
Nap: 11am - 1pm
Lots of activities/errands!!!!!
6:30pm bedtime

And this will usually reset him to be back on a 6:30/7 wakeup.

But, also, is it possible you are heading into the 18 month regression? I noticed a lot more early morning wakeups during that and there wasn't much I could do to change it.

@snowjewelz: we had a month of early wakings and then it went back to after 6 (funny, anytime after 6 is not early for me). But then this week he's got off schedule and is back to 5:30. Today 5:15.....

@KayKay: not a nanny most days....I work 3 days or 3.5 days so am with my kids the rest of the time....so 4 or 3.5 days a week. on weekends or the days i'm home we do one nap because 2 just isn't convenient.

@Littlebit7: usually not

Would he take his afternoon nap earlier? Maybe 2-330ish and shoot for 7:30 bedtime?

I'd probably be unhappy enough with the 530a wakeup to push for the 1-nap schedule, especially if there was a nanny most days to do things with him and power through in the morning. But as a SAHM, the little break in the morning is pretty nice too.... ;)

So I'd probably do whatever worked best for us that day! If it's 1-nap -- great! If it's 2, that works too! Eventually one of the naps will go to crap, and you'll need to fully convert, right?

We still have this issue at 22 months

We limit his morning nap to 30 minutes and try to do it as a car nap so that it's punctuated by a fun destination.

His schedule on these days would look like this:
5:30 AM - wake-up
8:30 AM - 9:00 AM - nap
1:00 PM - 3:15 PM - nap
7:30 PM - bedtime

R is 17 months and still seems to need 2 naps some days. He still happily takes a morning nap and his afternoon nap is a bit late. He still goes to bed on time-ish. However, it seems that when he takes 2 naps, he seems to wake earlier the next day.

Example on a 2 nap day:

Wake at 6:30
Nap 930-1045
Nap 245-4
Bed at 8

But then the next day up at 5:30, which sort of perpetuates the need for 2 naps.

When he takes one nap his schedule is more like

Up at 6:30
Nap 1230-230
Bed at 730 (and usually sleep until 630)

Would you force the one nap schedule, even if he's overall happier on two, to get hi to sleep later in the morning? This is sort of foreign to me as DS1 was solidly on 1 nap by 15 months.
