I tell LO to say Stop! No! I want her to say it loudly to scare them off and to stand up for herself. I also tell her if she sees anyone (friends) do it to anyone else close by (friends), say the same thing.

We are working on getting him to defend himself. Not by hitting back but by defensive posturing (moving out of the way or blocking) and saying no. He shouldn't respond with violence but he does need to not get hurt. He just doesn't have those self preservation skills and lets other kids bowl him over.

We are teaching DS to tell an adult. I don't want him to be rough and think that violence is okay. Despite what I've told him, he definitely pushed a little girl after she intentionally spat on him at preschool (yuck!).

My LO puts her arms up to block, I think she got that from our 2 big dogs brushing past her, it's quite effective for dealing with other toddlers though. Now she also says NO if another tiny one comes after her.

As a teacher, I have to write up any child who hits another one...even if they are hitting back in retaliation. Both children will get consequences of some kind, whether it's lunch detention, in school suspension or out of school suspension. But I always explain that it's better to tell an adult what happened than to take matters into your own hands. I deal with many parents who teach their children that it's alright to hit back and that's not allowable behavior in schools. I will teach my children to use their words from the beginning. It's not always easy to refrain from retaliating but it takes a stronger person to walk away.

I would say something to the kid if I saw it.. a baby or toddler I don't know that I would teach to hit back, an elementary school aged child? Probably lol

Then again I've always disagreed with the idea that if someone is picking on you to just walk away or tell an adult. Maybe if more kids fought back we would have less incidents of victims of bullying snapping, but that's a thread for another day :)

ETA I voted Other because to me it depends on age

It's hard t know!! like when my nephew who is 18 months and my son who is 12 months play together, often my nephew unintentionally beats up on DS. He hits, bites and sits on DS! haha. I want Cobi to hit/bite back because then my nephew would learn those things hurt and aren't ok, at this point he obviously doesn't realize his strength and what hurts. Being told no at 18 months is a game.

But as he gets old I don't want him to return violence with violence and I want him to be kind and not retaliate... but I also don't want him to be a pushover and be able to stand up for himself but the thought of him getting into a brawl frightens me!

It is complicated like @mrbee said.

This happened to DS at an indoor play area and I wanted to smack the little bugger myself.
BUT
I said very loud "We don't hit babies. That is not a nice thing to do." followed by "where's your mom?"
Ugh, I hate when parents drop off their kids at the play area and don't watch them at all.

DS (14 months) says "stop" but when this kid pushed him down, he just cried and cried. I knew he wasn't physically hurt so I distracted him, "you're okay. let's go play over here. look at this slide!"

When you're young, you should definitely use your words!!

When you get older though, it gets more complicated I think.

...Will you teach your LO to hit back or to tell an adult?

My parents want me to teach LO to hit back (twice and harder!) even though they taught me to use my words. Maybe it's a grandparent thing but the thought of someone hitting LO just kills my parents.

As a parent, I want to teach LO to hit back...But as an adult/teacher I want her to be smart with her words and use them.

This all came up yesterday because my friend's toddler blatantly shoved LO to the ground and it took all my strength not to pound the kid.

What say you??
