This is going to get wordy...

***Most of this info below was copy and pasted from this great IVF resource. http://www.advancedfertility.com/

Blood and ultrasound = blood test for hormone values (estrogen levels in IVF stimulation are important) and transvaginal ultrasound to measure the follicle sizes in the ovaries.

Lupron = subcutaneous injection of a medication called Lupron (GnRH agonist). This medication is taken once daily.

FSH = subcutaneous injection of a medication containing follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which causes follicles containing eggs to develop in the ovaries.

HCG injection = subcutaneous or intramuscular injection of a medication called HCG, which causes the eggs to complete the maturation process. This is taken only once in the cycle.

Progesterone = vaginal cream or suppositories or intramuscular injection of a medication (female hormone) called progesterone. This drug helps to prepare a receptive uterine lining for embryo implantation.

Egg retrieval procedure = the procedure that obtains eggs from the ovaries

Embryo transfer procedure = the procedure that places embryos back in to the uterine cavity

Ganirelix = subcutaneous injection of a medication (GnRH antagonist). This drug is taken once daily starting on about day 6 of stimulation.

Stim = ovarian stimulation. Involves subcutaneous injection of a medication containing follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which causes multiple follicles containing eggs to develop in the ovaries. Ovarian stimulation usually lasts about 8-11 days.

Clomiphene challenge test = is a dynamic type of test that can discover some cases of poor ovarian reserve that are still showing a normal day 3 FSH. This test is discussed on the day 3 FSH page.

PGD, preimplantation genetic diagnosis = involves removing a cell from an IVF embryo to test it for a specific genetic condition (cystic fibrosis, for example) before transferring the embryo to the uterus.

PGS, preimplantation genetic screening = is the proper term for testing for overall chromosomal normalcy in embryos. PGS is not looking for a specific disease diagnosis - it is screening the embryo for normal chromosome numbers.

injectable FSH =medication stimulates multiple eggs to develop Is usually taken for about 9 days. There are various FSH products that can be given either subcutaneous or intramuscular. In the US these drugs include Follistim, Gonal-F, Menopur and Bravelle

@FliegepilzHut: I know. @MrsWin: used it today in one of my threads. I had to google it because I couldn't remember what it stands for. I think it's so appropriate for some of us.

Adding PUPO - pregnant until proven otherwise

IM - intramuscular (injections)
IP - intraperitoneal (injections)
SQ/ SC - subcutaneous (injections)
Beta - blood test to confirm pregnancy

Maybe add a section about the different medicines names and what they are suppose to do. Also, other countries might have other names for them. I'm thinking of @Jaquar: and her medicines have different names.

@swedishfish: Interesting. Yeah with HSG, HCG and now SHG. It can get very confusing. My RE was all proud that he coined SHG and simply switched around HSG's letters. With my last clinic they used SIS and I like the saline/water part being in the abbrevation so I can somewhat remember the purpose.

Adding SHG, which is Sonohystogram... AKA SIS (saline-infused sonogram). I guess it depends on the RE and what abbreviation they use.

@bluestriped bee: I definitely visited her site. I remember there being some fictional book about m/c and then an actual book outlining the SMEP that wasn't a story of any kind? And that the plan originally came about as a way to get pregnant after m/c?
