We had babe in our room, but I still got up and nursed in the glider. We never got into sidelong because it resulted in a lot more spot-up for my reflux baby. Not to mention, we had some serious latch issues and I found I needed to be in the nursery and in the right position until she was older. Then the 4 month sleep regression hit and I spent hours in the glider in the middle of the night, holding her while she slept.

@californiadreams: DS slept in a bassinet in our room for the first 8-9 weeks and I rarely used the rocker in his nursery until then. While on maternity leave, during the day I nursed him on the couch like 95% of the time. Since then, we've used it daily (or more than daily when he was still nursing) - he's 13 months now. I fractured my tailbone during delivery so I really couldn't sit most places comfortably for the first few months as it was healing - that definitely contributed to my lack of use early on! Either way, I'm definitely glad we have a rocker/glider, but I could have lived without it for at least the first 8-10 weeks.

I had a c-section, and kept LO in our room for 6 months. I liked the glider (we moved it to our bedroom) but it wasn't really essential until the 4 month regression. I actually thought it was more comfortable to sit cross-legged on the couch to nurse than the glider, although the glider was more comfortable than bed for MOTN feedings. So I thought it was nice to have but not really THAT important until we hit the 4 month regression when LO needed rocked to sleep. And I spent hours and hours holding her while she slept. At that point I couldn't have lived without it.

@FaithFertility: i did see it! And i read somewhere else that someone who had a c section said their glider was essential for nursing. where did you keep your glider in the early days? in your room or the nursery?

We put the glider in the living room before she got here (partly just cause I wanted to use it, partly because the room wasn't painted yet when we got it), and wound up never moving it to the nursery. We just put the old living room chair in there (it's crappy, but we needed somewhere to sit in there. Mostly for when we have company and I need to pump). Since she's not going to sleep in the nursery anytime soon, there's no real reason to have it in there. And I like being able to watch tv during naps (which she's mostly held for, by our choice).

My LO slept in our room until 3.5 months. During that time we very rarely used the glider. Once he moved into his room we've used it a lot! So I would think you have plenty of time before you really need it.

@Reese: i don't need it next week! you can keep it a few more months.

@travelgirl1: if i have one, i would like to nurse it in for sure. that's why i now like the idea of putting it in our living room for the first few months. I'd probably prefer it over my couch - but it is not essential as i do have a couch. I see it as essential for when baby is in his room and i need to nurse and rock him before naps and bedtime. If it would fit in our bedroom, then that would be my first choice location for the first few months so i could use it in the MOTN, but i know it won't fit there so i was wondering if it was essential to have in the beginning because i know i won't want to drag my butt across the hall with a newborn to use the glider when we are both sleeping in my bedroom!

I was stressed ours wasn't going to arrive (remember the strike in the ports on the west coast? Our recline mechanism part was stuck in a container there). I was upset it wouldn't be here in time. Ha jokes on me I didn't use it until we moved her to the nursery at 3 months. I mean maybe occasionally for a daytime quiet nursing session if she was fussy. But I lived on the couch during the day and nursed in bed at night. We had an arms reach co sleeper.

Also we love our beco. Husband loves it too. I bought a regular ergo (not the 360) to keep in the car and I don't like it nearly as much. I feel like I'm wearing a backpack with uncomfortable straps that want to slide off (I always hated backpacks for the same reason!!). I love how the beco 's straps cross. I would highly reccommend trying them on. And the clips are not difficult at all. Much easier than trying to do the center back clip on the ergo.

With A we actually had the glider in the living room (didn't have a nursery) so we used it all the time, from day one. We moved it into our room when it became a hazard for exploring toddler fingers, so with T I haven't used it at all, it's be mir a dumping ground for clothes.

Do you plan to nurse in it? Can you imagine yourself going there and having L play there while you do? Or will you just nurse on the couch?

@californiadreams: I was glad to have one from the beginning because it was literally the only comfortable chair in our apartment to feed LO in. If you have someplace else that works, I think you can definitely wait.

@californiadreams: our glider is in our living room and we use it several hours every day. Our NB doesn't go to bed until late right now (11ish), so usually my husband is already asleep in our room. I stay out in the living room nursing and rocking the baby to sleep.

I also nurse in it during the day, pretty much every time I nurse except middle of the night feeds. My 2 year old plays in the living room and I nurse and rock the baby there so I can supervise. I'm actually sitting in it now to type.

I wouldn't use it near as much if it were in a bedroom, but here in the living room, it's invaluable to me. also it has an ottoman that rocks, so it's just super comfy for TV watching, It's totally upholstered--not the wooden kind, so it looks good with our living room.

@ShootingStar: great to know! so glad i made this thread because i was stressing i needed a glider ASAP but then i was like why? What you described is how much time i would have spent with LO1 in it in his room had we had one and why i feel i NEED one for LO2, but perhaps not in the beginning.

We room shared and co slept and I didn't use the rocker a lot while he was tiny. There were a few times that I'd go in there and rock and feed him but not a ton until after he was in his own room full time. Then, OMG.

Used it for HOURS a day sometimes. There was a really long stretch when he was on 2 naps and would only sleep on one of us. If he got up early, I'd sit with him in the chair and we'd fall back asleep. Then 2 hours a day for 1 nap (DH did the other one) and then more at bedtime. Such a worthwhile investment to me. We got a Best Chairs recliner and it's amazing.

thanks everyone! I am not questioning if i need to get a comfy nice glider at all.....i am questioning if i urgently need to have one by my due date! I was just thinking what is the rush if it will be in the nursery that we won't use for 5 or 6 months?! I know once he moves out of our room into his room, we will use it all the time.

@yoursilverlining: I thought of this....that perhaps i can keep it in the living room in the beginning. I remember many lazy afternoon naps sitting on the couch with LO1 when he was a newborn/infant. And he used to sleep in our living room too in the beginning which i may want to do sometimes in the beginning. Especially now that we have a multi-level house and not a one-floor apartment.

So basically, it sounds like i don't HAVE to have it by the time he is born, but it might be nice to have in the living room....so i can relax a little and keep looking for the best deal on my dream glider ;)

@Reese: which carrier do you use more? beco or ring sling?

We never used it. In fact, with DS1, we didn't have a glider until we moved into our house at 8 months. I still don't use it much with DS2, even though he's in his room. My kids needed to be bounced on a yoga ball.

We LOVE our glider!!!!
In the early days I would

We’ve coslept since the beginning, but I still used our glider a TON. It was in our living room though, we didn’t move it into the bedroom until LO was like 9 months old or so.

We are still cosleeping at 4.5 months, and I still use the glider in the nursery. In the early days I lived in it during the day for naps and nursing. I still use it for naps, and when we need a quiet place to nurse, because my LO is easily distracted.

I think I spent so much time in my glider in the early days (and still use it a lot) because it's really comfortable. It has a gliding ottoman with breastfeeding stool, and it reclines. I've actually slept three-hour stretches in it.

We co-sleep but still got the nice glider that we wanted. For a few months she did sleep starting out in her room, and there was a period of time she napped in her crib, so the glider was essential, esp for DH who is a big guy so he needed something comfy.

It was also useful when we have company over so I could take her there to nurse in a more quiet/private space.

My LOs were in our room until 9 weeks and we didn't use the chairs in their room until then. We have a love seat in our room (where our dog usually sleeps) that I used to nurse the babies while they were in our room.
