@kodybear: There is definitely a learning curve the second time around, and I tried to just go with the flow. I had nothing to lose by trying. DS2 latched after a few tries and was a lazy sucker at first. I kept at it and had him eat every 2 hours around the clock for the first few days. My milk came in by the end of the second day, and he became better at feeding. I felt like I didn't experience a lot of the usual struggles that I had with my first. I took it one feeding at a time and tried my best not to stress out.

Both DDs were jaundiced severely enough for the hospital peds to want to use formula to get them to poop and pee a lot. I wanted to BF DD1 very badly, but she got used to the bottle and didn't want to nurse.

DD2 was OK with going back and forth, but she had a shallow latch that really hurt. I saw a couple of lactation consultants at the hospital, who said I was really close and just keep at it, but I didn't want to. DD1 did fantastic on formula, so I knew it wasn't the end of the world if DD2 FFed also.

@swurlygurl: well if you were able to make 18oz at one point, then it probably isn't IGT.

I had supply issues with DD and ended up supplementing with formula but aside from some formula in the very beginning (I went away overnight but hadn't been able to build a big enough stash yet) was able to otherwise EBF DS until he was 15m.

One thing to check is whether or not your flanges were the correct size. With DD I kept being told to use bigger flanges when I wasn't pumping very much, however with DS I actually had to go to the smallest size and boy did that make a difference in both pumping comfort and output.

@junebugmama: At my best (5 weeks pp) I was getting 18 oz from 3 hours total of pumping. My supply kept dwindling from there to 4 oz and 5 hours (I was stubborn and really not wanting to give up!). L was never a good eater (jaundiced and sleepy), and at her 4 week checkup I discovered she was losing weight, and multiple weighed feedings revealed very little supply. That's when I started EPing, but I think my supply had already settled at 4-5 weeks.
That's my thinking anyway, so I have plans to start pumping ASAP to build up my supply plenty (since I'll be returning to work early :crying: )
I will definitely look into that IGT - good to know as much as possible - thanks!

@swurlygurl: I obviously do not know your situation and this is not a diagnosis of any sort, but pumping for 5 hours per day and getting 4oz, if you did this consistently, with no increased results, may be a sign of insufficient glandular tissue (IGT). Maybe something to peak at.

@yin: did you have trouble the first couple days/weeks trying to get LO#2 to latch and eat properly? i hope to bf #2 at least alittle bit (i bfed lo#1 for about 2 weeks before EPing due to bad latch/tongue&liptie issues). my fear is that i have to go through the whole learning curve of how to BF since i didn't go through that with LO#1 ... if that makes sense. i am okay with EPing/supplementing this time around though, but i do hope i can at least make it to the 1-2 month mark to establish a good supply!

@swurlygurl: I struggled a lot with that I *SHOULD* be able to somehow make it work, because in primitive times, that's the only option. So they had to make it work. I struggled with that my body should have been doing it. Not to mention that LO had latch issues... never got even a 1/2 ounce at weighed feedings. Ever. Even though two LC's said her latch was perfect. Ugh. I get PTSD just thinking about it. Never again. I was exclusively FF and I'm fine. A happy mom is more imporant IMO.

@kjpugs: Ugh, I hear you about the anxiety. I *still* have some lingering mental trauma about our experience. I was placing too much pressure on myself. I can't even believe how relieved I felt when I stopped!! It's crazy how it seems like it should be SO natural, but it's not... :(

I just have the one LO but my situation was a lot like yours. I'm not going to attempt with LO #2 (if we are lucky enough to have one.) I know I have supply issues due to PCOS, and since DH works opposite schedule to me (nights) it was incredibly difficult to pump all the time with a newborn around. Cannot imagine doing so with a new born and toddler. I felt so much stress relief when our BF/EP journey ended that I know I won't be attempting again. I have a lot of anxiety issues though so I think that's more important for me.

@T-Mom: Yes, that is going to be a huge plus for me - SO much less stress since I won't worry about formula again. Although, I would definitely prefer to not have to buy formula... $$$!

I quit at 4 months with my first. I think we got off to a bad start. I tried to get her on a schedule too early, and I also had to evacuate for a hurricane when she was less than 3 weeks, so I think the stress tanked my supply. It felt like I was doing it the first time again with my second, but it came a lot more naturally since I relaxed and just went with the flow. I also reminded myself that my DD did great on formula, so it was no big deal if it didn't work out.

I was unsuccessful with DS1 and ended up exclusively pumping for a year. My supply caught up to his demand at around 1 month, and we stopped supplementing at that point. He lacked the sucking reflex and had a hard time with a bottle as well.

I was really scared that it wouldn't work out with DS2, especially since I was so inexperienced. Right now we're at 5 months and still going strong. I haven't run into any issues so far, and I'm hoping to continue until he is ready to call quits.

If you had horrible supply or were unable to breastfeed your first baby, did you have any luck with LO #2?

I tried SO hard with DD1, but at the end I was pumping for 5 hours a day and only getting 4oz total. :crying:

I'm wondering what the chances are that it's just ME, or if we just got off to a bad start that I was never able to adequately correct. (We did get off to a bad start - FTM, bad eater, etc)
