Lurker here who decided that I'm going to jump on this post..I'm on cycle 17, maybe? I don't even know and lost count. We've been trying for #2 since August 2013. AF just came today, I think. :crying: I'm waiting for the nurse to call back to see what the plan is for the next cycle. I've done 2 cycles of Letrozole already; however, this month our timing might not have been great since I O'd much earlier than anticipated.

I'm doing all this with my OB and am getting nervous as to what point do I go to a RE. Plus, I live in an area where I'm not even sure there is one!

Oh, and YES, Christmas shopping is done! Yay :)

@Leialou: exciting!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful, kind support. You ladies are the BEST! I really wish you were all local. I'm doing better today. We close on the farm Wednesday, and now in the TWW, so between that and Christmas, the TWW should fly by. We will be going to visit FIL for Christmas and a few friends, who are unlikely to ask about kids.

@Mrs. Pinata: Ah, the "resident infertile." I recently realized that I, too, have taken on this role at Church. My mom forwarded me this text she received from a lady at Church telling me about this Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration on Friday and that praying to Mary on her feast day would be extremely beneficial to me. How did she know? And another lady had recommended an acupuncturist to me. And yet another had told me that she keeps me in her prayers. And to top it all off, I had my first RE appt last week and SHE goes to my Church! Ahh! So now, it feels like the whole stinking Church is aware of our issue. And while I appreciate extra prayers, I do not want the extra attention!

@AmeliaBedilia: I'm so sorry. Yeah, my younger sister was waiting a few years to have kids... of course the time flew by and that time came and she is now pregnant. Time stands still for us and it's so hard to see others getting pregnant. You think 'Oh, I'll be pregnant before so and so.' In our horrible world, we 'hope' we are pregnant by a certain time but sometimes it just doesn't happen. Hugs to you.

@AmeliaBedilia: I'm so, so sorry. :( 4 years into our journey, it's the pregnancy announcements (especially the... oops! pregnant with our 3rd!) that hurt more than the failed treatment at this point. Not to discourage you, but to encourage you that that's totally normal to feel super sad about that. It's hard to not have "safe real life people" to go to to talk about what you're going through. At first the only safe people were those without kids, but now it's those that are just really kind and undesranding people, but there are few.

And nothing like people the "resident infertile" at church and getting a stomach bug that keeps you from your work at church and so many people asking my husband if I could be pregnant. :( Since I was just 6dpo, even if I WAS it's way too early for those symptoms to show up, so yeah, just a misleading stomach bug for the world to suspect (and apparently also ask) if I'm pregnant. :/

I'm having a rough day. Our last married friends without kids (all signs pointed to them not having kids for another year or two) told me today that she is pregnant. While I have had several friends have babies during our TTC journey, this one really hit me hard. Another friend had slipped up, thinking I had known, so at least it wasn't a total surprise. I am feeling extra discouraged today, and DH is working til late tonight, so I am all by myself. I am trying to get my mind off of it, but I am struggling.

I am so appreciative of you ladies who get it and offer such great support.

@bluestriped bee: She said would refer after 3 months on ovulating-inducing meds or immediately if there was male factor. But, the more I research, many of the RE practices look like they don't need a referral if you're paying out-of-pocket. I'm going to call the practice I'm interested in on Monday and see what they need. It just seems so pointless to go on trying without knowing if or when I'll ovulate. I can't time anything well and TTC just takes over our lives.

@Mrs. Pinata: I asked about Femara when she first mentioned Clomid in July/August. She said she doesn't like to use it first. DH is going with me next time, and he's a much better advocate than myself. Hopefully, we can hash out a plan that everyone is comfortable with.

I also wanted to say thank you to everyone again. It's been awesome to have others to discuss the issue with. And your suggestions and experiences are so much help.

@Hoots: I have a theory. One if the possible side.effects of.Clomid are cysts. Maybe if that's the only ovulation stimulating drug she know about she's afraid that would make your cysts worse? I wonder if others would know this, but is that not much of concern with femara?

@Hoots: Ah, it's your OB. Yeah, when I asked my OB about our trouble TTC after 6 months, she referred us to a fertility clinic to have a SA done. (There were also health concerns with my DH, which might be the reason why she suggested the DH get a SA done.) I'm grateful she referred us and at such an early time. (It's usually normal for OBs to wait til you get to the 12 month mark.) I would have also waited if she told me to try a little longer. (I was prepared for it.) I've seen many of us with IF get referred to an RE at all different months. I think it just depends on the OB.

It is a good idea to stay at your OB to reduce costs but I think a fertility clinic might have a different goal than an OB would. They might be more aggressive with your treatment since most of us pay out of pocket. If you want to be more aggressive while staying at an OB, you might have to find another OB. That's what I would suggest.

@Mrs. Pinata: Yeah, I did get that feeling. When we discussed the birth control option to begin with it was more along the lines of "let's use birth control and then the clomid immediately after you stop to try to give you the best shot at ovulating." Now it's more "I want to see if you ovulate naturally." It's probably highly unlikely. Regardless, I don't actually want to try to cycle naturally, just make a bunch of cysts like normal, and then have to go back on bc again to clear them up before starting medication. That just seems pointless.

@Hoots: Yeah, the Clomid (or similar) cycles sound WAY more affordable. Did you get the feeling she wouldn't let you try WHENEVER you were ready? I don't like it when they call the 'age' thing either! We started TTC when we were 26 and 28 and now we're 30 and 32 without ever having a BFP. Age is NOT the only factor. :/

@Hoots: This really bugs me. I copped the age thing a LOT when we started TTC (I was 26, 27 at IVF time) - and now I *still* get it at 30, trying for #2. All with proven infertility and what-not.... and yet people still like to tell me that my age is a magic number, and we should be getting pregnant, so calm down, relax. That's CRAP! I say find a second opinion. x

@bluestriped bee: So this is still my ob/gyn. I originally wanted to feed into the RE that was with her program, but I've been heavily reconsidering based on their financing options. When originally discussing with DH, we both decided we were comfortable doing 3 orally medicated cycles with her before moving to an RE at the yearish mark. At this point, we've decided to make an appointment with her in January and try to go with the original plan. If she doesn't want to do that, we'll go ahead and move to an RE. While I think I'd be okay moving on now, it is much cheaper do the orally medicated cycles with my obgyn based on how her office codes things for insurance purposes. Any hope of coverage goes out the door with an RE.

ETA: My gut feeling is if orally medicated cycles don't work, to move straight to IVF. The RE that I'm leaning towards uses the Assure program, which seems like something I'd like to take advantage of.

@Hoots: yikes! Yeah, if a dr told me that, I would switch dr and find another opinion. Is there another RE in your clinic? Is this an RE or your Ob/Gyn?

I saw an RE 3 years ago and I was 28. I was started on Femera and started doing IUIs. I don't feel like I was super aggressive because I was told my IUIs should have worked but looking back I know why I made the choices to do 6 IUIs. I do wish my gut feeling would have been to do IVF but I think it was my wallet speaking.

Generally speaking, if I feel strongly about something I tell the Dr. that it's my body and I know it best and that I'm feeling like (fill in the blank) would be the best decision for me at the time.

@sarahnicole218: That might be a good compromise. She was all about starting clomid in August, but I was the one who held back. Looking back, it was probably a combination of denial and needing time to process that things wouldn't go exactly as I had planned. It still caught me off guard that I'd more than likely just be wasting another half year. I'm totally not down for that.

@Hoots: HUGS!! I'm so sorry about this news, which must have just felt so overwhelmingly disappointing. You definitely have to continue being your own advocate and maybe ask for a compromise? Maybe she'd be willing to start Clomid in March, at the 12 month mark? I know that 28 is "young," that is also my age...but the decision to have a child is a very important one, one that most don't take lightly. You are ready, you have mentally prepared for this step in your life and I feel like her job is to help you achieve that dream. Good luck to you! :goodluck:

So I talked with the doctor today. The good news is that the SA was completely normal. So it's just me. But my doctor wants to kind of switch the treatment plan up, which annoys me a bit. The original plan was to start clomid immediately after 3 packs of bc. Today she told me she'd like to see if I cycle normally after bc and start clomid in June (um, what?). I pressed her a bit and said I wanted to be aggressive (after all I'm nine months into this shebang and have only ovulated once). After lecturing me about how young I am (28.5), she said if I'd really like to she'd go with the original plan. I'm a little bit baffled and contemplating finding a new provider, but I really don't want to start from scratch.

We try to make Christmas simple, and we are about finished with gifts. We are closing on the farm next week, and AF is due Christmas eve. We have a history of everything happening at once, and I am so hopeful that we get a farm and a BFP so close together.

CD15 and probably O today. DH has been sick so timing is suboptimal. We did BD yesterday morning and hopefully tonight. This month I am doing herbs, and added L-arginine and hypnosis. I feel a little crazy, but I read several things about it and the mind-body connection lately, there was a living social deal, and DH said it couldn't hurt.

@sarahnicole218: I am so happy to read your update! It is so nice to have a doctor you are comfortable with, and to feel like you have a plan moving forward. It sounds like you have both of those things! Fingers crossed for you! :goodluck:

I am almost done! Just a couple DIY things to finish and then the wrapping...oh the wrapping, haha!

IF Update: Had my first RE appointment yesterday. I am really going to like her, and the facility where the appt was. I FINALLY felt like someone cared about what I was going through and the 21 months of patience/pain we've gone through and she is open to whatever route we choose to take. Basically, I've already done oral meds + IUI, so we can do oral + injectables + monitored IUIs OR we can jump straight to IVF. DH and I are praying about this decision, but I already feel a strong pull to IVF to get this show on the road. But, to help guide our decision, I will be doing the HSG next cycle. If my tubes are blocked, then my decision has been made for me.

I was pretty emotional yesterday, before and after the appt, but today, I am feeling relieved that we have a started to make a plan to finally conceive (hopefully). In the meantime, I have sought out some support from friends of friends who have gone through IVF and adoption, just so I know what to expect.

Since I am in the middle of a cycle (about to O) that is not medicated, no IUI, no nothing, DH and I are just calling any BD we do "practice" and not stressing. We intend to bring our minds away from TTC and focus on the holidays and our time with family.

@Hoots: That drives me crazy- missing a call from the doctor and then not being able to get a hold of them minutes later! Agh! Imagine how hard it used to be before cell phones! I had an amazing cocktail at a party last week that tasted JUST like ambrosia salad. It was so delicious and I drank a few. I don't know if this is the exact recipe but here is one:
