@Lowell: thanks! We're in the NoVA burbs too. I do think the handwriting issue is executive functioning for sure. I finally got her in with a therapist and I'm hoping that'll give us some steps forward on all this.

My 3rd grade son has ADHD and we found comprehensive neuropsych testing to be so helpful as we were trying to understand if this diagnosis really applied to him after school flagged executive functioning concerns for us (it definitely does!). In the DC area, can’t say enough good things about the Stixrud group in the Bethesda area (we are in NoVa suburbs). This type of testing is certainly not cheap, but we are so grateful we did it because they are so thorough and it gave great insight into all the brain functions required to be a kid (not just school, but social and emotional too!).

Currently looking for handwriting/OT resources for the summer but my sense is that my kiddo’s handwriting issues are not just weak fine motor but are also influenced by all the organizing and sequencing that writing requires. Happy to share local resources but not sure how private messaging works here as I mostly lurk and don’t post! :silly:

@Baby Boy Mom: we've definitely had physiological issues to some extent (very high energy, hard to settle down for sleep especially, seems to wind up in the evening, and can be fidgety, though so far no issues at school at least) but nothing that's raised red flags for me yet (no eating issues and bloodwork last year was clean). She's about to start working with a therapist so I'm curious to see what we'll learn. Thanks for the tip, good luck to you!

"Sometimes she seems like a mini adult because she can talk about biology like an expert, but then can't write a paragraph that's legible or get ready in the morning without a meltdown". This is one of my kids. I really like those charts above and I definitely think we are seeing this, like I can see an inkling of maturity coming.
The only thing I can add is that neuro things are also always physiological. For my kid it looks like there are some mineral deficiencies, so might be worth finding a holistic doc or nutritional therapist to investigate more. I recently learned about muscle testing and am interested in trying it to see if it will help us figure out that side of things once I find a local provider. Just thought I would share if it helps.

The executive skills planning team at my school bases its curriculum around this book, and always recommends it to parents, too:

@Aria: that's really interesting to hear, thank you! I don't think she'd officially qualify as gifted, at least based on my understanding of the term in the school sense. She's more advanced in some areas academically but she's not so far ahead academically more broadly that she'd qualify for moving up a grade or even testing into an AAP program necessarily (she's doing AAP for certain subjects, but given her handwriting issues we didn't think she'd be right for a broad AAP program). Sometimes she seems like a mini adult because she can talk about biology like an expert, but then can't write a paragraph that's legible or get ready in the morning without a meltdown so this is really helpful to hear, thanks!

I wrote a whole long post and it disappeared. Blah. But basically my daughter is similar (minus the handwriting thing). If your daughter is “gifted” it may just be that her brain hasn’t had enough time to mature yet. I attended a workshop that explained gifted kids brains take longer to start the maturation process (start at age 13 vs 8/9) and the executive functioning skills are the last to develop. It was helpful for me to reframe it knowing that my daughter struggled with these things because it is just something her brain is not capable of yet, which felt counterintuitive because she’s so smart in so many other ways. We keep checklists that help with our biggest struggles (list for what to pack in the morning, one for tasks to complete when she gets home, and one in her folder to remember her coat and water bottle). I just have to remember it will kick in eventually!

I have a kiddo with ADHD primarily inattentive and executive function is an issue for them. I'd check out Additude website/Magazine. I get the magazine and have signed up for their daily emails about a variety of ADHD topics. They also have quite a few free webinars from ADHD experts about all manners of topics, I have one saved that I need to watch about executive function. The website has a ton of info about executive function related to ADHD so it may not be exactly what you're looking for but I would guess it would have some resources for you.

I just started reading this book to help support my 8 year old who has some executive functioning issues and possible ADHD: https://www.amazon.com/12-Principles-Raising-Child-ADHD/dp/1462542557
I really like it so far and Russell Barkley has been around in this field for ages. Even if your daughter doesn't have ADHD, there's so much overlap with general executive functioning issues that it could be helpful.
He also has this book for a more general look at EF, but I'm not familiar with it: https://www.amazon.com/Executive-Functions-What-They-Evolved/dp/146250535X

What resources might you recommend (books and articles/reading materials especially)? My daughter is coming up on 9 and I am wondering if she might be having some challenges developing in this regard, but I don't really know enough about the concept so I'd love to educate myself.

For context, I've had some concerns about AD(H)D with her over the years, but have been told by her teachers since pre-K that they don't see any issues in school. She's academically advanced (in 3rd grade now and doing advanced math and reading at higher grade level) and does well with tasks in school, but tasks at home/outside of school can be really challenging to manage, especially things that are responsibilities rather than fun. Organization is a big challenge at home especially (and at school, but we've tried to manage this by having less stuff at school to organize). Remembering things, like to bring her computer charger home every day. Spacial awareness is a big one as well (being mindful of her surroundings and other people - she's very empathetic to people's emotions and thoughts but will physically walk straight into someone despite them being in front of her). Staying on task, like folding her laundry, or cleaning up at home, is nearly impossible without guidance/hovering. Handwriting is still pretty illegible chicken scratch (I've posted about this before) which I read recently could be an executive functioning issue. It's not majorly inhibiting but something I want to learn more about and pay attention to so that she doesn't end up getting older without proper support. Would love any tips/suggestions/resources. Many thanks!
