@Modern Daisy: we were down to one feeding at 4 months for awhile...but that all went right out the window! :/ hopefully sleep stays good for you guys!

@MamaMoose: That's what's so hard about all this! Opinions vary so much between pediatricians. Normally I just follow my gut but I'm torn.

@Kemma: ha! I think mine is also a booby baby :) I don't see her ever voluntarily giving up nursing, she loves it!

@septca: I think you are right-on about the sleep associations. I've always nursed her right before bed had when I set her down she's pretty drowsy. Going to work on that!

@birdofafeather: yes! If I don't nurse her she absolutely flips out! But nursing means she passes right back out in 10 minutes. Ugh.

@dolphin: oh that would be hard!

@Keppa: right there with you. She wouldn't take a paci or bottle :/ yes, minus the sleep deprivation I love our nursing time!

LO is 17 months and still nursing like it's his job - usually 3-4xs a day and 1-2x at night. He's never STTN (ok, maybe a few times ever) and he doesn't have any other way of self-soothing (never took a paci, bottle, other kinds of milk, etc). I keep hoping that he'll wean himself, but honestly he loves it and I don't see it happening anytime soon. The only reason I'm interested in when he might wean is that it seems to be effecting my cycle for getting pregnant with #2. But honestly, other than the lack of sleep, I love nursing him and I'm dreading him weaning as much as wondering when it will happen.

@Mrs. Deer: 14 months because I couldn't take it anymore. We started just after 12 months and went slowly working on one wakeup at a time (get to 10PM, get to midnight, get to 2AM, etc). At 19 months we are mostly night weaned (no nursing before 5 AM although 4 45 often is ok.

I think we stopped night feeding at around 11 months - she had sttn once or twice, so I knew she could make it. First I reduced to once night feeding from two. Then, we spent a few nights where DH would go in instead of me so she wouldn't want to nurse. I continued to nurse her during the day until just recently at almost 17months - with a few "regressions" on the night nursing while traveling.

DD just turned one and she still wakes up 1-2x a night for a quick nursing session. She drinks cows milk during the day so night wakings are the only time I would offer the boob. I know it's out of habit and the pediatrician said I need to stop because she should be able to sleep longer stretches by now. But I just can't...we share a room and her crib is at the foot of my bed...she stands up and stares at me crying! :(

@birdofafeather: we basically used the sleep easy solution for night weaning. I'd take DS from his crib an hour before his normal wakeup times and nurse him, dropping the time by a minute each night. I was so scared to do this (and to cut him off early once we got down to like 2 minutes) but he responded so well to it. Only a couple times did he wakeup on his own during his normal time. The few times he did I left him to self sooth knowing he had a full belly and he'd go back to sleep rather quickly. He was pretty much weaned in a week with no wakeups ( except with teething) after 2 weeks. It was the best thing we could have done at that point. Iwas just so exhausted after a year of interrupted sleep!

But I really really really want him to go back to sttn! If things don't et better by the time he's done with his antibiotics we'll have to do something :(

@Mrs. Deer: i could have written this post every day for the last week. we're at 11.5 months and still 1 MOTN wakeup where i feed her because any time DH has tried to calm her down without me, it escalates into craziness and otherwise if i nurse her, she's back asleep in 10-15 minutes. :(

@hilsy85: no no no! don't tell me this! i was going to wall you today and ask how the heck you got L to STTN on his own finally. R's been sick and it's gone from 1 MOTN wake up to 2 with a hard time falling back asleep. :( i was really hoping she would drop it on her own by now. waaahh!

We have night weaned twice - at 6.5 months we intended to drop from two MOTN feeds to one, but DD dropped both at the same time. Travel, teething, and illness broke that lovely STTN cycle, so we night weaned again - we were down to just one, 4:00/5:00 am feed - at 9 months. It took three nights and DD has gone 11.5+ hours without eating every single night since then (she's 11.5 months).

The biggest change we made to make this possible was breaking the nurse-sleep association. Even though DD went into her crib awake, I used to feed her right before bed. That created an association in her mind so it was hard for her to go back to sleep without eating when she woke up in the MOTN. We started feeding and changing her 30 minutes before bedtime and it worked like a charm! I found the Troublesome Tots blog on sleep training REALLY helpful.

My baby is 5 months old and was formula fed (and no, this is no different! Whoever told me that she would STTN at 3 months because of formula was wrong!!). I stopped giving her a feed during the night last week. I was so worried about it, I thought she must have needed it, but she just went back to sleep and it all went without any issue.

FWIW, no, I don't think you are considering it early at 12.5 months. If you are happy to keep doing it then that's fine but if you are not then I think it's ok to night wean at that age.

When we sleep trained at 5.5 months. He would sleep from 9-6, nurse (and later bottle) and then back to sleep until 8:30. Since we bottle weaned he gets up at about 7, 7:30 naturally. He was a chubby baby, so going through the night without eating was fine for him.

Before we STed though we were co-sleeping and he was waking 2-4 times a night to nurse so I feel your pain!!

C is 5 months and still waking 1-2 times a night usually, sometimes more, very rarely she will sleep straight through until 5, nurse, back to sleep. She has never slept 12 hours straight.

Our ped gave the go ahead to try and drop those feedings but I still feel like she's really hungry then, plus there is always something-- traveling, teething, whatever-- that makes me feel like I can't.

But I think she should be able to drop it at 12 months, if you want to. No recs on how to do it though! I am just hoping she will drop it on her own still.

@Mrs. Deer: My LO is 13 months old and I asked the doctor about this at her 12 month well visit. He told me my LO is too small (15th percentile) and too busy (aka constantly burning calories) to be expected to go 12 hours at night without eating. So.... we continue to nurse once a night. Twice on the bad nights. All this to say, no advice, but I feel your pain on the lack of sleep!

I am wondering this too. DS has been slowly dropping night feedings, but his darn 3-5am wakeup is going strong. It's wearing on us and I am dreading the idea of him regressing (he's only 4 months old). Our pediatrician gave us the 'ok' to wean him, but I wonder if we should wait for him to drop it on his own?

To start, Lucy's maybe slept through the night twice. We've had a couple stretches where she'll only wake around 4/5AM to nurse (totally doable). We're now back to our norm though of 2-3 wakeups and it's slowly killing me :( I hope this doesn't sound whiny, but I have always been someone who needs good sleep. It's been a rough couple of weeks now (plus traveling and the stomach flu) and I think we need to be done with night nursing. I know she loves the comfort of nursing when she wakes up, but I'm barely functioning. We still nurse 4-5 times during the day and she's 12.5 months old.

For those whose LO's didn't self-nightwean, how old were they when you stopped feeding them at night? Do you think I'm doing it too early?
