My parent's house is HUGE and I really like it. I wouldn't mind buying it, but I would always consider it as my parent's house even if I owned it.

I would never buy my parent's house because I have no desire to live in a small town. However, I've often dreamed of my brother buying our childhood home so that I could visit it from time to time. I don't think it's going to happen though.

@Mrs. Polish: No, being married shouldn't affect it. I guess I was thinking that there is some kind of tax reprocussion for my MIL selling her house to us for less than it's worth. That's when my research shows that my MIL would have to pay a gift tax (aka Estate tax). I still don't know if the MIL will have to pay. Some sites say yes and some sites say no. Guess I'll have to talk to a real estate lawyer, if and when it happens.

My parents no longer live in the house. Let's say we were looking to buy into that neighborhood ( relocated to where I grew up) and had lots of money to spend then, sure why not. We would buy it and renovate it. The house is a 1940s split level and ideally we would turn it into a colonial.

I would love to own the house I grew up in. It's a 1920's bungalow in a great neighborhood in Seattle with a rare double lot and my mom did tons of work stripping and restoring all the original wood-work in the house. Definitely a labor of love! I would love, love, love to own it again someday, although I don't want to move back to Seattle so that complicates things a little haha

@bluestriped bee: no, we just approached the mortgage company with the purchase price and closed. I'm not aware of a gift tax that was paid. We weren't married at the time, not sure if that makes a difference or if it varies by state.

I live in my childhood home. My parents passed away and left it to me (which my dad asked me if I wanted it before he died and I said yes. He wouldn't have given it to me if I told him I couldn't take it on or anything). We did major remodeling to the floors, bathrooms and lighting and bought new furnitute so it feels like us. However the kitchen setup is organized the same way my parents had it because it is a habit to look for certain things in the same spot. Luckily DH was ok with this.

It did take some time to not feel like I was sleeping in my parents bedroom when we first moved in. But I love this house and happy to be here.

@bluestriped bee: My parents are currently in the process of selling their house to my brother for a lot less than it's worth. The house is worth $330,000, but they're gifting them back $80,000 of the sale to use as a down payment. I have no idea how it all works, but some mortgage broker set it up for them!

@Mrs. Polish: Oh, cool. We couldn't afford the house if she sold it to us at market value. So we'll have to figure it all out. Did a brief search and it looks like we or she will have to pay some sort of gift tax. Did you look into the gift tax when you bought your house?

@BabyBoecksMom: Haha. We didn't think about that. We did think it would be weird to live in the same bedroom. I was telling the DH that we could move the bed.

@Mrs. Polish; I am with you. We are in the house Eric grew up in (the farm) and when we first moved in I had a few small hissy fits over him teasing me that I was putting things just where his mom had them. We've been here over two years now, and it took me a long time to feel like it was my house. Now I really love it!

My childhood home? Maybe but since my aunt (dad's sister) lives there now she probably wouldn't appreciate us moving back! No, if I could choose one of the houses o've lived in in the past I would want my grandparent's (dad's parents) house. It's several acres, has a pond, etc but after granddaddy died, my grandmother has alternately let it go in places and done sketchy improvements in other places. So no, not worth the move or the renovation it would require.

Besides, I like our new-old house! :)

No. The house my parents own is small, poor layout and kind of run down. It needs a lot of repairs. I feel badly for my parents because they definitely owe more than its worth now so they feel stuck. The land though is very nice. Over five acres, on a lake and pond. Trees, room for my dads gardening, hills and flat land. It's really pretty. It's just the house that isn't so nice.

Same with my IL's house. Very run down and small in a sketchy neighborhood in New York.

Yep, but mainly for the land, I'd probably do a lot of renovations to the house itself. I'd do an addition for a master suite and change the layout downstairs.

My parents still live in the house I grew up in. I wouldn't want to move back to my hometown and the house honestly kind of creeps me out. It was a duplex that was made into a single family home so it has a lot of square footage but I just don't think I could live in a house where I don't feel 100% comfortable!

The house I lived in til I was 11, no. It's in a yucky town with bad schools (which is why I went to private school a half hour away). The house we moved to after & my parents still live in, hell yea! It's just under 3,000sq ft, 2 car garage, pool, very nice neighborhood with sidewalks on both sides, walking distance to town pool rec area, convenient to highways and has a fantastic school system. If only we could afford it, Hahahaha. We wouldn't even consider buying my ILs' house, it's gross, but it's in a decent neighborhood, so if a not gross house was available there and his parents moved out of the neighborhood, we'd absolutely buy it, wouldn't buy it if they still lived there though.

We bought our house from my MIL. It isn't dhs childhood home, but she lived here quite a while.

At first I was very skeptical, the price she offered us was well below the assessed value and really an offer we couldn't refuse. It has allowed us to never be upside down on it. It took me a while for it to feel like my house and not hers. I did some drastic decorating changes and how it's hard for me to remember what it looked like before.

@MediaNaranja: real estate in your home town is completely ridiculous right now!

My parents' house was a cinder block mid century modern--- not my style! But their yard was amazing. But I will never live in my hometown, so that's out.

The house they live in now, they built themselves in the last 10 years and it is lovely. But we would probably buy land nearby instead.
