Sometimes kids have a serous otitis which is non-infected fluid in the ear. Docs won't always tell you that because they don't want to be pestered for antibiotics which won't help the condition... but that's probably why.

Thanks guys. I haven't noticed her doing it much when teething before, or at least not to this extent. She keeps tilting her head to the side to put her ear on her shoulder, or laying her head down on the ground or couch on the right side. But she is at the right age for her incisors (I think). Guess I'll just keep an eye on her.

Thanks for the reassurance!

It could also be allergies, I was surprised when my ped ruled out an ear infection and declared it to be an effect of seasonal allergies.

I agree with everyone about teething... DS does this all the time when he is cutting teeth and the pediatrician said it can put a lot of pressure in their ears.

DD grabs her ears all the time and has for 5 months. I think it's a tired/teething/baby thing. At least for us.

Agree with pps, my LO grabs/rubs his ears when he's teething or overly tired.

Yeah, teething or just sleepy. Or if they have a cold their ears may need to pop but they don't know how to force it to happen, kwim?

E was doing this a lot a few months ago and I was convinced that he had an ear infection so I took him to the ped and she said its a common sign of teething. He cut a new tooth at the end of that week!

DD had a cold a week or so ago and the past several days she's been grabbing or rubbing her right ear. One time she was playing with a toy and stopped to grab her ear and cry. I took her to the pediatrician on Thursday and she said there was no infection after looking at her ear for 1 second. But she's still rubbing it all the time and just seems like it hurts. She's 16 months and has had 2 ear infections in the past (diagnosed by our old ped).

Any ideas on why she keeps grabbing it? Or words of reassurance that she's fine :-)
