@pastemoo: very interesting. My LO feeds 10 mins per side max and usually only one side. Our pediatrician told me that studies have shown efficient babies can completely drain a boob in 7 mins but of course I continue to worry about how much he is getting anyways.

@c.sassy: If you have good supply, she will eat quickly. When I get LO to latch properly (still difficult!) he is full in 5-10 minutes on just one side. If he doesn't latch right, he may feed for 30+ min and then want the other boob.

@winniebee: Thanks for asking this! I've been wondering myself. And my little girl is a quick nurser too. All of my friends act like there is something wrong with her finishing so quickly and only taking one side. Glad to hear someone else's LO does this too!

Creating the artificial demand could be a good thing if you want to build up a freezer stash... or if you have any interest in donating your milk to a milk bank. Otherwise, I'd follow the advice from the other ladies.

Exactly what @pastemoo said! I pumped just enough to take the edge off the un-nursed side, thus not creating too much demand. After a while he will start eating more- I can usually get mine to nurse enough off both sides to make me comfortable, but sometimes I swear he wants to torture me with mega boob on one side! This is especially where I like using the manual pump, since it is pretty quick when I'm full.

Just talked to the lactation consultant about this yesterday! If its painfully full... just pump enough to relieve the pain--do not pump until "empty"--this should be enough to keep it from being engorged next feeding.
Good luck!

I used to pump the other side if it felt really full or engorged. If not, then I would leave it and nurse LO on it for the next feeding. It totally depended on how it felt.

I don't. LO only nurses one side most of the time, occasionally if I've got my crap together I'll pump the other side, but mostly I don't bother.

Do you always pump the other?

75% of the time, DS (just over 3 wks old...) only drinks from one side per feeding (he usually only nurses 10-15 mins total. If I disturb him and try to give him the other mid-feeding, he sometimes will take it and sometimes won't. Oftentimes, I pump the other side. But, I'm worried that I'm creating an artificial demand by pumping too much. Then again, if I don't pump, my breast is overly full and really hard for him to drink off of next feeding (and I think I have a fast letdown meaning he gets drowned and chokes).

Thoughts?
