If she's happy, I say let her hang out. I put my son down at the same time every night for bed and sometimes he'll stay up for an hour or longer, just playing in his crib. My husband and I can clearly hear him from the next room but LO - who is 12 months - seems content to wear himself out until sleep comes. Once he's quiet, I walk over to his crib, rearrange his blanket and stuffed animal, then go to bed myself.

I've done this for naps too. Sometimes they just need a while to themselves, just like we do. I say follow her lead. If she's happy, you're happy, keep it up. If something wrong, you'll fix it. No worries :) And you're not a terrible mother at all.

...do you just let them hang out in their crib, if they are happy?

LO is 13 months tomorrow and for the past few days I've been putting her down at the normal time (between 2 and 3pm) for her afternoon nap, but she won't sleep. She just hangs out in her crib. She just rolls around, stands up, cruises, hoots to herself, etc. She seems perfectly happy. I've let her stay in there for up to a half hour because she seems content and I get to have lunch. She doesn't cry at all or even fuss, she seems to enjoy it and she's usually more cheerful when I go get her. Am I a terrible mom?

ETA: I have a video monitor (Foscam) so I know exactly what she's doing :)
