I think you handled it well, too. I'm too chicken, but if I started small talk somehow like you did, and the lady seemed amicable, I'd probably help out, too. But, not if she seemed to try and shoo me away, lol.

@anbanan15: it's been at least 5 years, from what I understand. And they could have gotten it as a hand me down or from a thrift store (or for one of their older kids even)

@Navy_Mommy: We saw them from afar and I'm not sure how approachable they were...they didn't seem like it, TBH. It was actually an Amish couple, so I know they wouldn't have had access to any new recommendations. Actually the wrap may have also been really old with older instructions? I know the one I purchased for DS 2 years ago does not recommend forward facing.

@anbanan15: those are the times I ALWAYS say something. Moby wrap used to recommend wearing FFO but they don't anymore. I usually lead in with nice wrap, transition with your back will feel much better if you keep baby up high (close enough to kiss), and finish off with I may be wrong but I think Moby recently announced they don't recommend wearing FFO.

If someone is wearing their baby unsafely I'll say something no matter what (i don't jump in with THAT'S NOT SAFE or anything, lol, i just make it a point to correct them, usually by offering to show them a more comfortable way to wear). If it isn't unsafe just not ideal it depends... iwon't go out of my way, but if she happens to say something to me first I'd offer some help.

I think it helps that I almost always have a toddler tied to me, lol.

You handled it perfectly in my opinion!

Oh I struggle with this! We saw a dad wearing a baby outward facing in a Moby. The baby was dangling so low that he was below the man's crotch and the fabric was bunched up at the babies crotch, barely holding them in. DH even pointed it out to me asking if that was wrong.

I didn't say anything but really wanted to. I've seen other babywearing improperly and it's so frustrating. I especially get worked up when I see carriers being use that aren't even recommended.

If you can easily slide it into a casual conversation, I think it's okay to say something. I probably would have been appreciative.

If not... no. You shouldn't just walk up and correct someone. Thats a little obnoxious.

I think you handled it well.

You did an awesome job! If you had just went over and said "Hi, I noticed you're wearing wrong" she would immediately have her guard up. You found a great way to make her feel comfortable. Wrong or right, no mom likes to be told they're WRONG, but most will accept advice the way you offered it. Loves it!!!

If in a situation like yours where you were already talking, yes I most likely would have. If I was just walking down the street (or in a store) and saw it, probably not. I love how you approached it with her.

I had a similar dilemma when I saw a friend posting pictures of her son on Facebook forward facing in an Ergo. I approached it by asking if she had instructions for the Ergo and that it isn't advised that the baby FF and that I didn't want her son to get harmed by using it incorrectly. She took it much kinder than I expected her too, as she tends to not take suggestion well.

You asked first if she wanted to see- that's the most important thing!! If she says yes, it lets her guard down to not feeling attacked or criticized. She then feels empowered to say yes or no and the sheer fact of answering that question changes how receptive she is to the information. It's a little technique in behavior change counseling. :)

I think the way you told her, was great! I think if you would have just walked right up to her and said 'you're doing that wrong', it may have come off/ended much differently. you never seemed to make her feel like she was doing something wrong, just offered a suggestion on how to make it better for both her and the babes :) well done!

I think you did a great thing, especially by feeling the situation out cautiously at first. If anyone gets too aggressive with me about something I should be doing right away, I get turned off and make my escape.

I think starting with small talk, asking about their baby, then casually mentioning "this helped me" and see how receptive they are is the way to go. It's usually obvious pretty quick if they aren't interested in chatting, those ones I'd leave alone.

Personally I wouldn't have said anything just because I don't know the first thing about ring slings :) Anything else and I may have started chattering.

...would you correct them?

DH, LO, and I were walking home after dinner and I saw a lady carrying her LO in a ring sling and she had it way too loose and the ring was really low. It looked really uncomfortable. After chatting for a few minutes (her LO is 1 year old), I asked her how long her LO let her wear her in the sling. When she said only about 30 minutes, I told her the my LO usually handled it for longer if I wore the ring higher. She looked interested, so I offered to show her.

I helped her adjust the sling to how it is supposed to fit, and they both looked so much happier! The mom kept waving her arms around since before she was supporting her LO by holding her under her bum. And the LO looked more comfy snuggled up to mom.

Would you have said something?
Should I have minded my own business?

If we hadn't chatted for a few minutes, I wouldn't have said anything. And I didn't phrase it as "this is wrong" rather it was "my LO likes this better."
