If it was a close friend or family member that gave me a gift one-on-one, I'd thank them then, and I wouldn't bother to send a note. If it's someone I don't know super well, or have a "formal" relationship with, I'll send a note, just in case they're offended by not receiving one. I do however send thank you notes after showers just because that's what you're supposed to do. For these little gifts I think I might send a little thank you, but it's entirely ok to skip it too. I'm pretty into thank you cards, but I mostly send them to older generations (like aunts/uncles/grandparents). If someone like that gave me something I would later send a thank you card. They are definitely token gifts (washcloths, baby blankets). And I guess I should clarify.. they aren't 'paying' clients (ie they don't pay me or my company.. they are employees of a company and have access to me as a free benefit.. if that makes sense). So far two of them have given me baby gifts (SO SWEET and unexpected!) in my office, where I have opened them, oohed and aahed, said thank you, hugged them, etc. Do I also send a TY note? I always do after a shower or after receiving something in the mail (duh), but am never sure about in-person gifts like these. Thanks!
