Like some others that wouldn't be my go to. If they couldn't get their act together than I would but I'm not going to threaten to take away a class or preschool or other activity when there's just as effective ways of dealing with behavior. If it's an exercise related activity I'd just be punishing myself bc kids need to get out that energy.

Yes, I have. I've removed my son from lessons before they were finished when he was negatively impacting the class.

It's taught me that I can't just enroll my son in classes because I wanted to do classes as a child, he must want to as well. After trying both swimming and soccer with poor results, we've stopped lessons until he asks for them....which may be never, lol.

If you make the threat, you have to follow through!

I hate it when we are in a restaurant and DH tells E if she doesn't behave we will go home. Ummm..... I'm hungry, dude!

DS is only 9 months old but I've watched my younger cousins and they always go through a 24 hour learning curve when they figure out they don't get away with as much as they do at home. We have definitely cut fun outings short and wasted money cause I've followed through on threats.

I think I'd hedge my bets and not threaten a punishment that would cost me money... right now my kid is 2.5 and even now I pick my battle. Sometimes if he is misbehaving at bedtime I tell him he won't get a song if he keeps it up, but I really shouldn't b/c if we skip the song EVERYONE's night is bad type of thing. If the behavior was directly related to the thing I'm spending money on I'd have to reassess.

Right now I wouldn't do those things for the most part because she is three, and I don't do those kind of punitive punishments yet. (It could be though, that she is throwing tantrums and as a result we do cancel something, but that's not necessarily a punishment.) But I would do this. I mean, lots of parenting costs money.

@mrbee: oh heck yeah he would have. My parents rarely (never) followed through with a consequence, so by then their arrangement was just a "dance."

It hasn't come to money yet, but this afternoon I definitely cost myself some sanity by following through. She through a huge fit over a diaper change when I wanted to take her to a music thing at the library that she likes. We are having our washing machine replaces and there is stuff all over the living room and I really wanted to get her out but after her behavior I had to follow through. It sucked way more for me than her.

I'm careful about only making threats I will follow through on for that reason.

Consistency is key. You make a threat you follow through with it.

With that... only make a threat you will want to follow through with!

Probably? I would probably value the lesson over the money. Not big on top down parenting, but I suppose if there was a pre-agreed consequence I would follow through.

Well DD is only 9 months so we aren't there yet but in my opinion, the lesson is way more important than the money in the grand scheme of things. So yes, I don't plan to consider cost to me when my kids need to learn a lesson.

The thread about chores made me think of this. Do you ever teach your kid a lesson even if it costs you money?

When my bro got his first cell phone as a teen he promised to cut the lawn, which would have meant my mom no longer needed to pay for a lawn service. He may have cut the lawn 2 or 3 times with a lot of prompting before my mom gave up. She didn't confiscate the phone because the cost to get out of the contract was high. In this case my mom did not teach him a lesson- honor your commitments.

Some younger kid examples would be...

Bad behavior means cancelling a pre planned outting (sunk costs would tickets or fees)

Bad grades means they no longer can participate in a sport/ extracurricular activity (sunk costs would be uniform, activity fees)
