@locavore_mama: aww my parents don't want to enforce any limits either..naps, food, whatever she wants, she gets..and I think it's going to stay that way. :P She's just easier to distract right now so it's not hard to feed her what I want, etc. They'll have to toughen up as she gets older, haha.

LO is allergic to milk, eggs, and peanuts. Most people are too scared to feed him. My FIL asked if LO could eat cheese curls... DH's aunt started to feed LO flan but luckily someone stopped her in time. So I pack him meals every time he goes over to my in-law's house, which is so much work on me. I spend a whole day prepping for my LO to go over to Pop Pop's house, and I wish my in-law's would offer to feed/cook for him. It's not that difficult to cook rice, saute or bake meat, and roast some veggies. I just wonder what's going to happen when LO2 is born and in-law's will be watching him while I'm in the hospital. I can just imagine packing him meals while I'm in labor.

@googly-eyes: I mean they do respect our limits. They know that we do not want her eating fast food, no ice cream yet (regularly) etc etc. But they just don't feed her the way we would. Like the other day her lunch consisted mainly of French fries because she didn't "want" to eat the other stuff.

Maybe if they were watching my LOs for example, like if DH and I went on a date night then yes, I wouldn't care toooo much about what they ate...But if it were a regular thing, like once or twice a week that the grandparents were babysitting, then it would be a different story. My kid, my rules. I want them to eat healthy (within reason, of course) and I would definitely stress that to the grandparents.

@locavore_mama: Lol. Well if it were frozen fish sticks every day I'd be worried but so far so good! When I was seven we moved near my grandparents and I started getting junk food a lot and gained a lot of weight, which came off almost immediately after we moved back away from them. So I definitely can see why some parents choose to fight this battle, but thankfully I don't have to!! Which is great because my parents so want to spoil that girl! :)

My ILs live far away, so I don't worry too much about what they feed C since their time with them is minimal. That said, they are a bit more indulgent than me but seem to accept the limits I mention (ex no juice)

So far, no, but it's been purees (both homemade and store bought, organic and not) mostly for us. We are making the transition to table food now. I think to be honest MIL is less likely to feed her something unhealthy than I am, and she pretty much follows whatever I ask her to (to my knowledge at least. She always asks approximately when/what to feed her.) My parents are more likely to feed her something unhealthy but only a little bite/lick, which I don't really mind. I try to choose my battles. (Eta, not saying this isn't a worthwhile battle...just not for us since dd's grandparents are pretty good about not giving her crazy amounts of junk food!)

He definitely gets more treats than when he's with us, but it's not bad- it's more that they'll give him watered down organic juice instead of straight up water, or let him eat a much more carb-heavy diet than we would at home, but when I say "treats" I mean he gets a slice of homemade banana bread or some jello after dinner, not that they're feeding him candy and soda. We don't worry about it, and they definitely make an effort to find and make proteins and veggies that he'll eat, and they always have a variety of fresh fruit for him to snack on.

Yep. L isn't old enough for food yet, but my MIL watches her other grandson several days a week and I have actually hears her say to my SIL, "Oh, it's fine, just give him the dessert and stop fighting for him to eat dinner first. Junk food, McDonalds, and Taco Bell was practically all you and your brother ate growing up and you're fine and healthy."

Um...really? So yeah, I'm fine with them getting spoiled and extra treats and grandma and grandpa's house - but NOT when the grandparents are the main babysitter while mom and dad work.

MIL watched LO 2 days a week. I picked her up the other day and they had just finished their sundae cups. I am sort of whatever on that though, since it is not something I ever give her, I figure it might as well be a treat from Grammy. I pack her breakfast and lunch though and she usually eats what I pack (not that it's always the most healthy either).

My DD stays over at my parents' place once a week and she gets lots of cocoa puffs and eats breakfast at Burger King. One of the reasons why she loves it there :-) . She also gets healthy chinese food and lots of fruit. We don't stress about it, that's what grandparents are for!

my mom is good about making sure my LO doesn't get too much sugar and respecting my wishes, but my MIL acts like I'm abusing him if I give him water with dinner instead of juice! she is constantly offering him sweets (i think in part because she has very unhealthy eating habits herself and in part to try to get him to like her more) and we have had terse words about it. he's 3, and i let him have plenty of treats, she is just completely over the top. to the point that i really don't want to leave him with her unsupervised. i think i would be ok expecting him to get some treats when he is with them but geez! she takes it way too far.

I try not to think about it... MIL was funneling cookies into my niece and nephew before dinner one night, then wanted my niece to stop filling up on guacamole so she would eat dinner, which was pizza. I would much prefer my child to get the nutrition from guacamole than pizza!

Yes! I see what my nephew eats and it makes me worried. Lots of ice cream, chips, chocolate. We just figure he'll get all that when he's with them. We try to limit his sweets and snacks, and my mom knows that, so she doesn't give him too much.

This is my biggest fear about my mother babysitting our LO on a regular basis. She has already joked at they would visit McDonalds and Burger King type places and Dont tell mommy!" I feel really strongly about her not eating those things so young. Honestly if my mom chooses not to listen we may choose other daycare options.

Uhg, if LO doesn't do well being at work with me he'll be with my MIL for 3-4 days a week. She watches my niece during the days too, and she has the most awful eating habits..which says a lot because I don't have the best eating habits, and am not too picky about what kids eat.. but, seriously ..lets fill the kids up on marshmallows and chips and then when they don't want lunch, just say okay, and throw it away?

She's a child nutritionist. Ha. The irony in that makes me want to punch her.

My ILs started watching LO one day a week this month. DH & I both agreed we accepted the fact that day will be her "unhealthy" day. ILs don't eat the most healthy in the world so we're not going to stress ourselves out over it!
