@mrs. bird: that sounds like an awesome program! I took a few classes on prisons & society (sociology major) in college so I'm always interested in re-entry programs, they're a win win :heart:

@swurlygurl: that's interesting! i've never heard of one that wasn't 100% produce.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I was so so excited to join one but we've only had one week of produce so far and they keep sending out long blog updates about how things aren't going well :/

No, our CSA uses a TON of different farms. I'm not too pleased with ours... I was hoping for a lot of produce, but it's 1/2 produce, 1/2 random stuff.

Like, this week:
3 onions, 2 pattypan squash, 1 bunch celery, 1 head broccoli, 6 oz blackberries, pepper relish, ketchup, dozen brown eggs, 8 all beef hormone free blah blah blah hot dogs, 8 pretzel rolls
We pay $25 a week. It's technically worth that, but I would never buy those hot dogs, pretzel rolls, pepper relish, ketchup, etc. It's fun to try different things, I guess.

there is a discount for volunteers, but i'd have to out to the farm so it wouldn't be any cost savings for us since we can pick up down the street.

@dagret: eeeeek, bedbugs! it's completely illogical, but i wouldn't want someone with bedbugs near my food! one of the farms near us is farmed by people who have been released from prison, i think it's a wonderful program, they get healthy foods, learn a skill they can use running farms elsewhere, and make money to get back on their feet. that doesn't have anything to do with migrant workers or bedbugs, i have no idea why i felt the need to share that, i just think it's neat program! :happy:

I've never gotten a request to volunteer. Thank goodness, if they asked dh would totally sign us up. I don't even like picking apples.

We visit ours regularly, and they are like family to us! We don't help in any hard-core way, but we do putz. And they are more than happy to have us come whenever. I've made them ice cream before from their eggs/lavendar.

@scg00387: um, no. The CSA we're part of doesn't solicit volunteers. They actually use migrant workers. (I only know this b/c DH sold them pest control when their housing had bedbugs.)

They do have Open Farm Days though.

I think we get a 5% discount if we volunteer 4 hours. DH is thankfully doing the volunteering.

Do you help on the farm?? We just got an email from ours soliciting volunteers. My first reaction is thank but no thanks, I'm supporting you with my $! But curious what the norm is? It'd be fun to take LO when he is older I suppose!
