I mostly offer things I love to eat/am eating, but I also make a conscious effort to offer more variety of fruits and veggies than I would eat in a typical week (I get stuck in ruts).
I am vegetarian and DH is not. I do make and offer eggs to LO though I don't eat them myself. He loves them!
ETA: I'm not really a picky eater aside from being vegetarian.

@Mae: LO was EBF. I do think that plays into it some. Though I was super picky until college and my parents are not and exposed me to lots of foods. I think it's pretty random, for the most part.

I'm a super picky eater, and I was determined that my daughter not be. I worked hard to expose her to a ton of different foods from the start. And it really worked, because she isn't like me. If make the effort if I were you.

I was always an extremely picky eater until I had kids..! haha. Now, especially now that my first is older and can reason with me, I feel really hypocritical not eating things that I insist he eat.

I am, however, allergic to a lot of fresh fruits and veggies, so sometimes I'll lie and say I'm allergic to something. Like, I can eat all berries but I hate raspberries (can't stand the texture of the seeds). So since I'm allergic to a lot of fresh fruits, I also say that I'm allergic to raspberries because he asks why mommy is not eating them.

I think you can make all the plans you want, but in the end, there are things you as a parent can not control, food is one of them.

I think you have to do the best you can to offer a variety of things and make sure that you use neutral language regarding food and trying things. As an example, some kids will put anything in their mouths, whereas others will touch food to their lips or tongue first.

@Weagle: Did you breastfeed? I'm sort of curious about the connection between breastfeeding and kids' food preferences mirroring the moms. I mean it would make sense that if I always eat the same stuff and never eat other stuff and I breastfeed-- that my kid would sort of have a taste for those things I always ate and would not really care for the things I avoid.

Of course pickiness could also be random! My mom was/is not a picky eater and I was EBF until 9mo and she said that immediately and consistently despite lots of attempts I basically refused to eat anything other than fruits and grains. It actually took a lot of work to even get me to eat poultry or the few veggies I do eat now haha. So who knows how that happened!

I'm personally not picky, so my LO has been fed some fairly spicy/"unusual" foods from the get-go. There are of course still things I don't love (raw tomatoes, for one, unless they're really nice) or have had aversions to during some part of my second pregnancy, and I still try to offer her those things without comment, even if I'm not eating them in front of her. Maybe this would work for you? You can even go as far as to have them on your plate (but not eat them), and "share" with her. By the time she is old enough to realize you aren't eating the item, hopefully she'll have developed a taste for it anyway!

I have a friend who is vegetarian, and her husband is not. Their agreement for their LO is similar to their agreement for adult meals in their home. My friend will not prepare meat for her husband, nor will she be the one to offer it to their child....but if he choses to cook meat for himself, and wants to offer some to their LO, that's fine.

I've always tried to offer her a big range, definitely including things I don't eat. Funny enough, her food preferences are pretty similar to mine.

I'm not a picky eater, however I don't eat beef or pork. I actually didn't realize it until one night when my husband gave him a bite of a burger out at dinner (probably 16 months) that he had never had it prior. Now a few times a month I will cook something that I wouldn't eat, so that he's getting a variety of meats.

I tried to feed them things I won't eat...but since I'm with them most of the time, I tend to make things I like, so sometimes it's lacking in variety/things I don't eat. Bananas were the hardest for me...I can't even stand the look of bananas, but I do give them to the kids.

Thinking way too far ahead this morning, but curious!

For those moms who are super picky eaters-- when your LO started (or will start) solids, did you mostly just offer what you eat? Or did you make a big effort to feed things you yourself don't/won't eat?

I feel like when the time comes, I should really make an effort to offer more than I eat. I do eat all fruits, but in terms of veg I only eat (uncooked) peas, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and lettuce/spinach. I will also eat cooked peppers/onions. But I don't eat any more adventurous veggies, no squash, no sweet potatoes, no mushrooms, no olives, etc and I don't personally like hardly any seasonings. I also don't eat most pork, beef, or seafood. When I cook dinner at home I stick to what I'll eat and my husband deals (then just eats other stuff when he eats out). But I worry that if I just start trying to feed our LO what we usually eat for dinner she isn't really going to be exposed to a variety of food at all and might end up as picky as I am-- which would suck because I hate being a picky eater!

Curious how other picky eaters strategize this :)
