I don't think so; I had a friend whom I regularly discussed salary with. He was having trouble getting promoted, but I didn't. I think it is super dependent on your manager and what you do at the company, and I've gotten some good stuff under my belt that pushed me up. I know I'm extremely competitive (salary ranges are published; we do work for the government), and I am pushing for a promotion and raise right now. I have no problem "acting like a man" in this sense. Many women don't ask, so of course they don't make as much.

@PurplePeony: in my field, you have to get a security clearance. My coworker negotiated after his was approved, saying that having the clearance was an additional qualification (which was true - if he was clearable he could easily get a job with a contractor and they would be out the 50k a clearance costs). In general I think the grades are pretty set but the steps can very widely for initial offers.

I work for the state (a union-protected job), and we function like @PurplePeony: . There are males with the same job title/responsibilities as me that make more, but also other women--they've been there longer, and I couldn't negotiate my salary at all.

There are no men at my level at my company. We get based on years experience, so gender has nothing to do with salary.

There is no way to know unless you're a manager. I know that I'm paid well for my position but i have no idea how it compares to the men. In my industry it's all about negotiating when you're originally hired, which I have both times I changed jobs.

Not exactly. I work for the federal government and we're on a strict grade and step scale. I had a different experience than @beaker in that there was no room for salary negotiations for my agency -- it was take it or leave it. I was promoted one grade after a little over a year, which is standard with acceptable job performance, but now just go up steps on the published schedule. Several of the other attorneys in our program do make more than me, both male and female, but it's because they've been there longer. When I get to the same length of service they're at now, I'll be at the same grade/step as they are now (though they'll have moved up steps by then so in absolute terms, they'll still be making more...but on relative terms, everything is equal).

Yes. I'm a Software Engineer and work for a Government Contractor.

One of my very good friends at work left the company a few years ago. When I was thinking that I might be underpaid, I decided to just ask him how much he made when he left the company. I found out he was making more THREE YEARS PRIOR to what I was making. Meaning at the time, he was making almost $12,000 more than me!

We were hired the same day into the same program. We had the same amount of work experience and had the same manager for the entire time we both worked at the company. The only TRUE difference between us was our internships prior to starting at the company, the colleges we went to as undergrads (we got our Master's at the same school and had almost the same GPA), AND the fact that he's a man.

Well I'm in a weird situation because DH and I own our company and neither of us get paid in salary, we take dividends. This year I got paid more, but last year DH got paid more lol.

I can't really compare my income to my coworkers' either because of that. They all get paid based on their experience and how long they've been with us. Right now they're all male, but we'd pay a female employee the same way.

Unusually, I was actually in a situation in a previous position where I made more than my male counterpart for essentially the same job function. He had been at the organization longer than me but they were very eager to hire me and so they gave me my highball salary request. I'm not sure if he ever knew but I think he suspected. As my job progressed my position expanded so it was ultimately probably pretty fair.
I wish that I had highballed more in my later jobs though!

I know that I make the same, because I work(ed) for a rather large company (also male-dominated) and there was a pretty rigid salary and bonus system. Granted, I have no idea if there were any sexist managers fighting for bigger bonuses for their favorite male employees?
From what I can tell though, men and women in my field make the same.

I know I make less, because it didn't occur to me to try to negotiate my starting salary. Argh!

ETA: I work for the federal govt, so we're split up into pay grades and steps - people freely discuss their grade, but their step is more personal (but occasionally it comes up).

The "worst thing about being a woman" thread got me thinking more about the wage gap and inequality between men and women.

I understand there is debate between the actual percentages and the different aspects that make it difficult to compare, but I curious to know more about people's individual experiences.

Do you know if you make less than your male counterparts? How did you find out that information?

I work in a male dominated field, and I wonder how much I make compared to a man (with the same experience). The problem is, I don't know how I could find out. I do know that there is a salary range (minimum and maximum) for each job title, but I don't know what that range is or where I'm at on it.
