I rarely drink anymore because I always feel like crap the next day, but I would and have drank while home alone with DD. Max I drink is a glass of wine - not nearly enough to impair me in any way.

@Foodnerd81: mine calls it Mommy juice!

Yes! I think it is good for a child to see their parents drink responsibly. I grew up with my parents having 1-2 beers every night.

I'm not a drinker, so I answered for my husband. He always has a beer or two with dinner, and sometimes on a weekend afternoon. He would do that even if I wasn't around and he was just with our daughter, and he's well versed in his limits. I wouldn't worry about it for a second. I would do the same if I drank.

I grew up with a parent who was scarred from her own alcoholic parents, and wasn't able to model healthy drinking for me. I'm glad that we're able to demonstrate healthy and positive alcohol consumption for our kids. My husband is really into homebrewing, and our daughter loves to participate in that too.

I'm not a big drinker, partially because DH doesn't like the taste of most alcohol so we don't really have it around. But I wouldn't stop myself from having a drink while home alone with DS.

It just doesn't even cross my mind to ever have a drink if I'm by myself but I don't see a problem with it. DH and I will sometimes both have a beer or glass of wine with dinner. So although never when I'm alone it's just that I won't drink by myself.

I will have a glass of wine if I want one, regardless of if I'm by myself or not. I used to always have a glass as soon as I got home from work while getting dinner ready- I did it to relax. However now that I have 2 Los, that just makes me sleepy and I have 2 to get down to bed, so I just wait until after if I want one. Just to make sure I don't fall asleep while trying to get them to sleep!

I'll have a glass of wine while cooking dinner and before my husband gets home. I doubt I've ever had more than 2 glasses even when he is home. I don't think both parents should ever both be inebriated with children in their care, though.

My toddler points to my glass and says "wine!" occasionally, so I guess that answers your question?

But seriously, I do not have a problem having a glass of wine or beer while she is awake, even if I'm on my own. I won't get to the point that I couldn't drive in an emergency of course. And generally, it's more relaxing to have a drink after she's in bed so I can relax, but some days I really want it just to make it to bedtime.

My friend and I sometimes have "happy hour play date" too- hang out at one of our houses and have a glass of wine while the kids play. :)

(All of this applied to before I got pregnant again).

I didn't vote because I always know my limits and trust my decisions.

I maybe have a drink a week and usually save it for social situations just because I like to get out of the house and have a drink with a friend once and a while. I don't really drink at home because DH doesn't drink at all (doesn't like it) and a bottle of wine goes to waste.

When my DH is home, we will totally have a drink or two
during the evening (while we are cooking dinner, during dinner) when the kids are awake. If we are outside all day, there's been days that we've both had mutiple drinks by bedtime (but spread out over a long period of time, obviously). No shame in drinking margaritas in the kiddie pool while the girls splash around! :-P We are both responsible and would never become intoxicated or get to the point we couldn't care for our children.

However, if my DH is not home and I'm alone, I don't have a drink until the girls are down.

ETA: Obviously this is all when I'm not pregnant. lol. ;)

I have no issue with a (one) drink: beer or wine, when my DD is awake! DH works 24 hour shifts usually so sometimes I'll have a drink with dinner when it's just me and DD (not as much now since I'm pregnant, ha!). I'm definitely not impaired. I actually feel worse the few times I have had more to drink and been tipsy (when someone else is home or DD is somewhere else completely) and those few times since DD was born make me feel terrible, so usually I stick to 1 or 2 drinks max as it is.

My husband gets home from work before I do and our weekends are mostly spent together. He was out last Saturday and I had a glass of wine but I enjoyed it so much more because my son was in bed. Not for safety but because I really can't relax chasing him around!!

Yes – I have a glass of wine with dinner, while LO is awake. Most of the time DH is also home (and having a cocktail or glass of wine), sometimes he isn’t. I don’t feel weird about having a drink alone with LO – if you are truly not impaired, then why would there be anything to blame yourself for if something happened? I guess it’s an easy scapegoat, but would you blame yourself in the same way if you got a crap night’s sleep the night before and something happened? Lack of sleep can impair people too, sometimes significantly.

I also think it’s unhealthy to hide drinking from anyone, including kids, or to set up all sorts of rules around times/days of drinking. LO knows that wine is for grownups only, it’s not a taboo subject or a big deal.

I have no issue having a glass of wine while alone with LO. It doesn't impair me in anyway. And I don't see why LO being awake would be any different than LO being asleep. My kid going to sleep doesn't give me a pass to drink more because I still feel like I need to always be able to handle any emergency that might come up.

Just as a general note, I really disagree with people who say they would never drink in front of their children (unless they don't drink at all anyway). I think it's important for kids to see their parents drink alcohol responsibly as opposed to making to some taboo issue that mommy and daddy do behind closed doors.

LO is not here yet, but I don't envision me having any problem with having a glass of wine while he is awake and I am alone with him. I don't drink much in general, so it wouldn't happen much, but if it did, I'd have no qualms about it. I think my dad would have a beer a night, when he was home alone, in charge of me. Never a big deal. As long as it is like one drink, and you know your limits, I don't see how it could be a big deal.
