My parents are not great with the kids. My mom's excuse is that it's been so long since she has dealt with young kids. My younger sister is 20, so it really wasn't ages ago. She was just never great with kids, and my dad took care of us for the most part. My dad is not physically or mentally capable of caring for the kids due to his old age.

My in-law's have been great, especially my FIL. They love spending time with the kids and spoiling them. When one of the kids are sick, they call daily to check up. My FIL has the kids over for sleepovers on the weekends when he isn't working. It's overall a great relationship, and I'm so thankful for them.

Neither are very good but my parents over MIL based on age & physical ability.
My parents don't have the patience for DS and are easily aggravated by his 4 year old energy.
MIL is in her 80s and showing signs of dementia, so we only do supervised visits.

My mom for sure. It's hard because or momma are the same age and mine is so much more capable, can keep up with lo no problem, take him to the park, store, even the subway. I am not sure I would let mother in-law babysit at night even... Father in-law is great, but not a baby guy, once lo is older they will be great.

My parents live "nearby" (3 hour drive) and see my son about once a month. The in-laws live in England and have seen him 4 times in 2 years. So it's not really a fair comparison. That being said, my MIL is really great with him when they're around, gets down on the floor the play with him, etc, while my FIL doesn't really seem to know what to do with him now that he's not a baby who just wants to be held. Of my parents my mom is the more useful one - she's babysat for the day sometimes and I don't think my dad would know how/what to do (last time (and actually the first time) my dad changed a diaper he threw the dirty one in the laundry hamper, and every time we put B to bed and then come down and he's crying my dad says "should I go in and hold his hand?"), but my dad is his clear favourite.

They have different strengths but they can all be left alone with my oldest. Wouldn't leave the baby with either of our dads for more than a minute. They love her but haven't kept up on baby safety and don't do diapers.

My parents can deal much better. My in laws are very much all up in their faces for affection, and both boys really can't stand it.

My parents are a plane ride away and I do not trust my kid alone with them. My Mom does not respect our wishes at all so she doesn't get alone time more than an hour or so. I would never trust her to put DD to bed or after because I know she would let her CIO. My in laws watch DD 3 days a week and are great with her and very respectful of our wishes. She sleeps over there whenever we ask. She's never woken up in the MOtN there and sleeps in Til like 9 which has never happened at home haha. It slightly makes me ragey!

My parents are better by a mile in terms of interacting with my LOs. Both of them were teachers before their current careers, and are just awesome with kids in general, so I'm not surprised. My ILs, however, like to play in the early morning when they visit (whereas my parents like to sleep in), so we get to sleep in when they're here, so that is a huge plus for them and they are still pretty good with kiddos.

I wouldn't say my mom is more more capable then MIL but I know my mother as a mother and MIL well things she does in my presence make me cringe, so I can't see being away for too long as I would with my mom!

do you have a set that handles your LOs better than the other?

We live in close proximity to both of our parents. My mom is our primary caretaker though so by default she is much more aware of everything that the kids need.

ILs see them once a week or so and randomly babysit a handful of times a year but it's usually after we've put them down for the night.

MIL is also physically limited to do some things for them due to some health issues.

FIL is the "can he have that" sweets obsessed papa and also slips as far as language and such around DS1.

They're both great at playing with the kids though.
