I think there are people who are happy to work holidays because they get time and a half. I would like to see a higher minimum wage so more people don't have to make that choice.

Nope - we buy the food we need ahead of time so unless I'm about to run out of gas or something, there isn't a need. I'd rather be spending time with family.

I used to work in store support for a grocery chain and shifts on holidays were in demand and assigned by seniority, so I never felt guilty stopping by the supermarket or drugstore if I really needed to.

I won't partake in any Black Friday on Thanksgiving shopping, but I've never done Black Friday on Friday either. I don't like the crowds so I've just never bothered. It's not so much ideological in my case.

We inevitably forget something we need from the grocery store for Thanksgiving. So yes, we will shop at the grocery store on Thanksgiving and Black Friday. We have done Black Friday in the past but that was "fun" not necessarily crazy. I will go in the late afternoon to the mall because there typically isn't much else to do on that Friday.

No I wouldn't. I don't really think it's a big deal to have to work on the holidays. What gets me about the retail aspect is the greed and focus on material objects on a day we are supposed to be thankful for what we have. Also, the fact people have gotten injured and killed over a sale is just disgusting. That's so much different then going to eat dinner with family at a restaurant.

I only go to those places if I have to, like if I'm about to run out of gas and I'm traveling. Otherwise, I don't shop on those days.

I used to work with someone whose dad was a manager at a grocery store. They decided to open Christmas Day for the first time and they asked if there would be any vounteers for people who would like to work Christmas Day. Between employees who have no local family, who don't celebrate Christmas, and who just wanted the OT pay, the response they received was overwhelming! They actually had to turn people down. Because that put another perspective on things, I have no issue shopping at certain gas and grocery stores on holidays.

I just won't go to the mall on those days. I think it's just not necessary and I think it's kind of sad.

Like grocery stores and restaurants?

I understand not going to stores that open on Thanksgiving (like WalMart, Target, Macy's, Kohl's, Kmart, Toys R Us), because you are helping the company, but not the employees that have to work and be away from family.

But what about grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, movie theaters and other retail stores that hardly ever close?

DH and I were discussing this. We've both worked for food service and retail in our past. DH has never worked for a store that was open Thanksgiving but had to work on black friday. As a manager, he had to come in super early to prep for black friday. (And you know, going to work early means having to leave Thanksgiving festivities early.) For me, I've worked at a movie theater on Thanksgiving and Christmas and I worked a 4am start shift on Black Friday at Target. Anyway, when I worked those shifts, I actually did not mind it. I was young and loved the overtime pay. Target was crazy but overall the day was really easy considering the amount I got paid. Each of the places I worked were overstaffed and had plenty of perks (like food) for us.

Now, that we are out of food & retail, DH and I understand that there are people out there that might not mind working on a holiday and getting the overtime for it.

Anyway, if you are not shopping on Thanksgiving, are you avoiding other stores that are usually open?

Just wondering how you draw the line.

One thing I was thinking is that black friday deals keep getting earlier and earlier. Like Kohl's and Target had deals released already... Maybe deals will start so early that maybe some companies will go back to closing on the holidays.
