I'm not sure if this is a standard Kaiser practice, but our Nurse Midwife definitely knew the sex early on. I think their well-integrated electronic file sharing system gives them easy access to records from different departments. At one point when I was about 36 weeks along, our midwife let a male pronoun slip. I was shocked! I had done the blood test for chromosomal abnormalities at 14 weeks (my health insurance covered it, which was awesome), so I suspected that it was in my file somewhere. None of my midwives let it slip, though, before then. When I saw the bracelets with my name and 'male' written I was taken aback, and just sad for my husband, who was the impetus to us being team green. I made him look though so we could both know. That being said, I have non-invasive prenatal screening for genetic disorders that showed the sex at 10 weeks. They put a sticker over that part of the result that says "Patient does not want to know sex". So someone could find out, but they'd need to actively look, it's not just right there. The radiologist doesn't pass on the information. With this pregnancy it will be in my file because we are doing the Harmony test. The radiology department doesn't communicate the sex to them, only the vital stats and measurements and such. The midwives only find out the sex before the birth if the parents have found out and tell them at one of the appointments! It was so funny when DD was born, DH and I kind of forgot about checking in the excitement of the moment. After a minute or two, the attending MW was like "should we check to see if it's a boy or girl? I don't know about you but I'm dying to know!" And we were like, "oh! Yes!
