Right now we just have a gate at the top of the staircase since DS was 1.5 when we moved in and listened in regards to the stairs. We have a gate for the bottom we plan on installing once DD starts crawling though.

We have 1 staircase and gate the top & bottom. It's not that unique a staircase but we are on our 3rd gate on the bottom and LO is only 16 months. We tried a munchkin gate twice at the bottom and it broke both times so now we went with what was recommended in Baby Bargains.

Only at the top. The stairs go to the basement, and she's never down there unsupervised. If our stairs were used more often (like going from living room to bedrooms) we'd have probably gated top and bottom.

Yep, we have a gate at both the top and the bottom. Both kids were obsessed with stairs once they could climb and would try to go up and down! Just yesterday, I forgot to close the bottom gate and Logan was half-way up before I realized he was missing!

We do on the main stairs, though the bottom one is really for the dog. I close the bottom every day so she can't go up to the bedrooms and scratch the carpet. We probably could've gotten away with just the top gate because our stairs are in an area of the house that DS didn't really go to, and he wasn't trying to climb up without us. But when we moved in the dog had issues running up the stairs and into the gate and falling. So we put the bottom gate up too. We have retractable gates on both.

We also have stairs going down to our basement, but they have a door at the top (with a childproof doorknob cover) and we don't bother with a gate at the bottom.

We have a gate on the bottom stair but haven't put one up top yet. We need to because DS2 - it's a disaster waiting to happen. THere's no way we could have gone without or could go without the bottom gate as he has always been a climber, since 9 months climbing stairs!

We just bought gates and will be gating both the top and bottom. Our friends with kids have gated both as well.

We have a gate at the top - at the bottom we have a gate across the hallway leading out of the kitchen/family room so that he can't get to either set of stairs.

Our gate is only on top of the staircase. I really didn't want to install one on the bottom, and delayed it until needed. Luckily we have no problems with either child going up the stairs.

We have a gate at the top of our stairs but not at the bottom. I actually refused to put gates up for the longest time, but then I started to fear that DS might fall down if he got up at nighttime and started wondering around. Our hallway at the top of the stairs is very open, so we used the gate that has all the interlocking pieces to where you can fashion it into whatever shape you need. Ours is about 7 feet wide and it's shaped so that there's a two foot landing at the top of the stairs before you hit the gate.

do you gate them at both the top and bottom?

We have two staircases to our second floor and our front staircase is an odd shape that there isn't even a gate available for it on either end :\ We luckily had no issues with DS1.

Our back staircase we originally gated at both ends, but eventually removed the bottom gate. We have a door knob lock on the door to the basement.
