I shifted my hours a bit to work 7-4, but if I roll in past 7, they don't comment or make a big deal out of it since I always get my work done.

As for WFH days, I still send DS to daycare because my productivity level would be super low otherwise. Especially now that he's older and wants interaction.

In my old job, I initially asked to work 32 hours/week and it was granted, with some hesitation. I was able to flex my hours, too. But i HATED what i was doing and reached out to one of my old managers and informed them that i wanted to work a "true part time schedule" at 24 hours/week and they opened up a posting for me. I just told him that i was really overwhelmed with everything and would like to go PT for a bit. He has 4 kids and was very understanding, plus there was a legitimate need for part time help. So it was pretty symbiotic, I think!

I'd be prepared for them to ask "how long" because it's not an indefinite solution at my company. I am only granted it through May or so, and in my head, i was willing to work 32 hours/week still, so i was prepared to counter

Thanks for responses! I'm already lucky to work somewhere that allows WAH, and gives everyone the flex start/end hours for your day. (I'm an unusual WAH case because I was hired FT WAH, but then moved to the city where the office is, so they let me keep most of my WAH schedule, but I'm the only person with this arrangement who lives in a city where we have office).

I am still waffling on how to ask. I think I may just bring it up in my annual review next week in a very broad way - would some form of part-time be something they are open to.

Beyond the money savings, I already feel like a frazzled mess most weeks juggling FT work and a toddler who still often doesn't STTN, I can't imagine the breakdown I'm going to have when I also have an infant.

I was approved to start working 7:30-4pm M-F. But then the owner's family member started working here and everything changed. My schedule got moved back and now I have to work until 5pm every day. I'm still pissy about it.

I asked to change my hours to 8-4:30 after a year since we were moving day care and the new one didn't open till 7:15 and then I have a 30 min commute. They said it was fine.

@runnerd: I dropped down to 75% hours and pay. My proposal was to be in the office three full days and one morning. That only added up to 70% time in the office and they're huge on face time and wouldn't approve it, so I ended up proposing I come in half an hour early every day I'm here to make up the extra 5% and they approved that.

I also work in an area where it almost seems to be the norm for moms to stay home, so I honestly think they were glad I was coming back at all.

For those that wfh some days-do you still do daycare or do you have your kids at home with you while working? If so, does it hurt your productivity or make it hard to attend a phone meeting if your baby is crying, etc.?

I started working a couple days from home before having kids and continued after. I recently asked for an extra work at home day and my boss was fine with it. Id ask and see what happens. The worst that can happen is they'd say no. Hopefully they'll be able to compromise with you tho!

I would make sure you're prepared for a plan for if they don't budge.

A friend and former coworker asked for this when she had her baby. She asked for "flexibility" when she returned. When she ware preparing to return, she asked if she could work from home in the morning (while her husband was at work), and come in to the office just in the afternoon.

She wasn't asking for fewer hours, but just to telework part time.

They flat out said no. They said when they agreed to being flexible after her maternity leave, they thought she meant "flex" time...like coming in an hour late and leaving an hour late.

She ended up quitting because her husband only worked part-time and it made more sense for them to move nearer family and in a lower COL area.

...what was your employer's response? Did they accept your proposal, flat turn it down, or accept it with modifications.

If my employer will let me work 24 hours with some flexibility to the hours, I can manage a plan without paying for more than $30-40 weekly for daycare (combo grandma care, drop in daycare, and working on weekends when DH is here). After LO #2 is born, the cut in pay would be almost exactly equal to the pay decrease from cutting my hours. I'd love to spend extra time with my kids until I only have one in daycare again.

Anyways, I'm just really nervous about asking since I already have special arrangement for work from home, and none of the other mothers at my company work part-time. The only way for it to be possible is to ask though - just curious how others' requests were received.
