I asked at 7 cm, and it was only b/c my doctor said it would still be a while, and she wouldn't come back to check on me for another 2 hours. Guess who was already pushing 30 minutes later?!

I was only 3cm. They asked me when I was admitted if I wanted an epidural, and I said yes. I didn't expect to get one so quickly.

@FutureMrsMcK: this is so perfect. I felt exactly like this with every anesthesiologist I dealt with. Wanted to punch them in the throat. By the time the epi kicked in I was a smiley, even giddy, and told all of them that I loved them. Not because I felt drugged up... but because I was out of pain and it was all thanks to them.

@Bao: Mine was a tiny blonde German lady--I wanted to punch her in the throat because she kept asking me questions and telling me things (standard med Qs, making sure I knew the risks, etc)...I was practically growling at her. After she placed it and was leaving the room I told her I loved her and asked her to marry me.

I was about an 8 when I asked for it. Shortly after they hooked me up to the fluids and were about to call them in to put it in though, I started involuntarily pushing. They said I could still get it (I was at 10) but that I'd have to be still and they thought it would draw out the length of labor. So I never got it.

First time I got it as soon as I got to the hospital. Contractions were bad but not mind blowing. Second try they were mind blowing. Third try I was in transition and I was out of my mind in pain.

Second time I waited as long as I could, but I had the IV going with pitocin and penicillin (induction and strep b positive). So I got to 6 cm before I felt like someone was ripping me apart from the inside out. They got the epidural in really quickly that time.

I'm not entirely sure. I was checked upon being admitted and was 3 cm dilated. I had to wait more than an hour before a delivery suite was available and in that time, the contractions were one on top of the other and exceedingly painful. When I finally got settled in a room, two hours later, I asked for the epidural. They didn't check me before they administered it; however, considering my contractions slowed right down and the next time I was checked I was fully dilated, I'm guessing I was further along than 3 cm when I got the epi. I'll never know for sure though!

I'm not totally sure. When I was finally admitted to the hospital I was 5 cm....and then labored for another 4 hours before I actually got it, but wasn't checked before I got it. So I voted 6.

I was only 3cm... but I was induced for preeclampsia so I was not allowed out of bed and had pitocin for about 10 hours before getting one. Once I got the epidural I was ready to push in about 8 hours.

I'm not sure, I think between 4-6cm.
I also had back labor that felt like I was being electrocuted and having a seizure at the same time, totally loss of every bodily function paired with the most severe pain I've ever felt. I was told DS was at an awkward position and in order to try to turn him they would give me the epidural so my body wasn't so tense, muscles could relax, etc. At that point I was like OH HELL YES.
I don't know what regular labor feels like because aside from BH I didn't really feel anything strong until my water broke. Back labor sucks.

How far dilated were you?

When I was admitted and checked I was 5cm and when the L&D nurse asked about my pain preferences I immediately asked for an epidural. I'd been planning on laboring without one as long as I could stand it, but back labor was a beast I wasn't even a tiny bit prepared for...I felt like my back was being smashed with a sledgehammer with every contraction.

I had to wait to get some fluids from an IV before they would give it to me, but luckily they had an anesthesiologist placing the epidural within half an hour.
