I used to take pumped milk in a little cooler but I felt like I was schlepping so much stuff. Then I started keeping formula and bottles with me for emergencies. It just took up less room. It depended if DH was with me too and where we were going (grandmas house versus the mall....). I was always nervous to be caught without food though since I didn't bf

I will usually try to pump before we leave if its close to being time for him to eat again, if he's just nursed then I just use the pre-made formula bottles while we're out. I haven't tried to nurse in public yet. But, my new car has tinted windows in the backseat, so I may try to nurse in the car and see how that goes!

Oddly enough, DS won't BF in public. Usually I'll end up bringing formula if we are going out when he needs to eat. He gets BM 90% of the time so I'm fine with him having full bottle of formula here and there. I've found this to be so much easier for us.

Ugh, never mastered that whole dilemma. I *just* stopped the whole pumping debacle, so life is about to get amazingly easier.

I would plan my outings between feedings/pumpings which gave me like an hour window... soooo obnoxious.

Pumped milk lasts 24 hours in a cooler with (approx) 3 ice packs. I've never had milk go bad in this time frame.

Sometimes I bf in public with a cover, sometimes I go to a fitting room or the car, sometimes I take a bottle of expressed milk (at church, for example.)

It depends on what we are doing. If somewhere I am comfortable BF in public I will. But if not I will do a bottle of formula. Then just pump when we get home. Course that depends on how long we will be gone. If multiple sessions, I just suck it up and BF in public.

I was never comfortable BF in public, just my personal preference. I would either take a bottle of pumped milk, if we were going to a place I could warm it, and stick it in small soft sided cooler with a few ice packs. I never had any go bad that way. Otherwise I would find a private place to nurse. Usually either a dressing room, or my car parked way at the back of a parking lot.

I used to take bottles of pumped milk with us. I know it's hard when you don't want to waste any of it, but I just found that it was easier. Like @highwire: said, breastmilk can sit for 4-6 hours after you've pumped it, so I would take fresh out!

LO is almost 8 months old now and I am much more comfortable nursing in public. He is not a fan of the cover so I even brave it some of the time, covering my breast with my hand before he latches on.

I also supplement with formula and depending on where we go, I will sometimes bring a bottle. And I am with you-- I would rather bring a bottle of formula if there's a chance he won't take it then breastmilk!!

Depends, really!

Pumped milk is okay to sit out 4-6 hours. So I just pump before we leave and pop the bottle into my bag. If I'm worried about heat, I stick the bottle in a tiny cooler bag with an ice pack to keep it fresh.

And then I also have pre-made formula in my diaper bag ready to go if she needs more than the breastmilk.

I'd be totally happy to nurse her anywhere, anytime, but she is very particular about being comfortable to nurse so she often refuses if we are out and there are things that are distracting or she isn't physically comfortable with the nursing positions we can do.

What do you do when you go out in public/day trip?

I breast feed, pump, and occasionally supplement with formula. I am not really comfortable BFing in public yet because I use nipple shields and it makes it difficult to coordinate because LO bats them off a lot of the time.

I prefer him to have breast milk over formula, but I am always paranoid to take bottles of pumped milk in case he doesn't eat them and then they will go to waste.

What do you usually do? BF in public? Pumped milk bottles? Or use formula when you are out and about?
