I bought concert tickets for a bunch of friends (and their friends). It ended up being well over $1000 for tickets and I totally assumed everyone would expect to pay me back right away. Everyone was cc'd on the emails so I was thinking they would know I wasn't made out of money. </p> <p>We actually had to wait for some of the tickets to be delivered so I told them not to pay me until a week after it was delivered. It was pretty clear AFTER I ordered all the tickets when the money was due. But looking back, I don't think I said it when I was just collecting the orders. I expected it.</p> <p>What was also interesting, is some of my friends insisted on paying me right away after I placed the order. Not necessarily the next day but the next time I saw them or something. If you don't see them until the event, then I would assume they would pay at the event. If you see them before the event, I would hope they would pay then. I feel like people should pay me immediately but experience has taught me that people don't bother until the date arrives, and even then they need reminders. The only time I've had people wait to pay me is if I'm reserving a hotel room and only the cc number is required to hold it, but no money is actually charged. I've done it enough with my friends that I know they'll eventually pay me back. Or I know that the experience WITH my friends is worth maybe not being paid back fully. Like I booked the hotel room for a group of us to go out for my friend's 30th birthday. I didn't get fully reimbursed by everyone, but it was still worth it to me to have that experience with them. And SOMEONE has to book the hotel room, unless we're all getting separate rooms, which would be even more expensive.</p> <p>Of course, if someone was a consistent flake and never paid me back, I'd stop doing it. But I haven't had that experience yet. It seems like there's nothing in it for them, and they also assume all the risk. If I'm buying 4 people tickets at $75 a piece, that means I'm out $300 for several months if I wait until the event. Plus, I have to worry about someone changing their mind and not paying me back.
