Best case, you can start using cloth after about a week - when the meconium has passed. But lots of cloth diapers won't fit very small babies, so if you're expecting one, then stocking up on newborn size is a good idea. Worst case - donate them later!

I used disposables the first month of her life (she was born 41w)

I believe I used 1 big box of NB size diapers (the 210 count?) and then a second smaller box. So maybe around 300? And whatever I took home from the hospital. I probably changed them a little more often than I needed to though looking back on it.

After 1 month (she was over 9lbs at this point) we used mostly cloth and disposable at night and when traveling or going out. I think I used one big box of size 1s. The next box I bought was one big box of size 2s. and now I'm actually on my 2nd big box of size 3s (bought both in August). After this box is done I will buy size 4 (she is 8mo now) because they're looking a little too small on her butt.

Mine was born average weight 7lb4oz and really short (like 5%) but jumped up to about 75-80% weight and 90% height over the first few months. So she outgrew NB, size 1, and size 2 fairly quickly.

I would ask for newborns and size 1. I am doing the same thing and I was stressing out over how many disposables to buy (what if she's tiny forever? what if she fits into cloth right away and we don't use them all??) until my husband pointed out that they don't go bad, so we can always donate them, give them to someone else to use or save them for our second child. For some reason I was really concerned about them going to waste.

We used disposables for 10 ish weeks int he newborn days. and like @Cole: we still use them on occasion when its more convenient.

I would definitely specify size most guys dont know what theyre buying and will just grab the first pack they see. I was at a baby shower a few months ago and one of the girl's friends who does not have much baby experience bought her a huge box of Sz 4 diapers. I hope she was able to change them bc i have 15m old and she still only wears sz 3.

I bought one package of newborn diapers (I think like 70?) and that was more than enough, but I only used them for about 5 days, until the meconium was done with, before I started with the cloth. LO was 8lbs 2oz when she was born and she fit my size 1 AppleCheeks diapers perfectly at the smallest setting (She's just about to grow out of the size ones now at 3.5 months).

We started cloth right away, but had to find some really tiny covers (Rumparooz). I still preferred it to disposables, since newborns poop constantly. We did switch to disposables for about 2 weeks after his circ though. I agree with the others 10ish/day is good. Newborn is the only size we went through a whole pack (and the hospital gave us some too).

I agree with the advice above. I am also finding it helpful to have a package on hand even while using the cloth for back up.I forgot to turn the dryer on one day and used a couple then, and when I know we are going to be out all day or in the event of a rash.

We didn't start cloth until he was about 10 lbs, so a couple months. We went through quite a few newborn and 1's. There are also times when the cloth isn't quite convenient (being gone all day, spending time with grandma, traveling, etc.) so we've continued to buy disposables to have on hand. We got quite a few diapers in multiple sizes from DH's work shower and have used them all for one reason or another.

Newborn and size 1, definitely. Mine didn't really fit her cloth until she was closer to 10 lbs.

We also did disposables at first. We started with cloth around 5-6 weeks I think. We went through about 15 a day.

Agree with @Mae that I would plan on disposables in the early days, so some newborn and size 1 probably.

We did disposables for the first 5 weeks, until she was about 10 lbs (we prob could've started earlier but I was overwhelmed with life until then). We went through about 10-15 diapers/day at first.

We plan on cloth diapering and have registered for bumgenius 4.0 diapers. I'm having a shower in January and my husband is going to have some guys over (mostly husbands of girls invited to my shower) to drink beer and hang out during the shower. We're debating whether we should put something on the evite going to the guys about bringing diapers.

How many disposable diapers do you use? Our baby will likely be underweight (and possibly a preemie) so she may not fit in the cloth ones for a while... but i'm not sure! We can specify newborn on the invite, too.
