DD is 18 months and we were nursing morning and night from around 16 months. in that time, i've been away for the night feed for work and i haven't pumped and she was fine. i was away for 48 hours and i hand expressed and pumped once (barely an ounce!). when i got back, she still wanted to nurse and she seems to be getting milk out!

we're down to just the night feed and i'm going away for 3 nights with my GFs. i don't know if i'll still be nursing at that point (going back and forth on weaning) but if we are, i'll probably just hand express because pumping did nothing.

good luck!

@heartonastring: I haven't been away from LO for more than a night, but I know I was producing milk for at least 2 weeks after he weaned! So I think you should be fine.

@heartonastring: ah ok. i just remembered that a friend of mine tried to wean her DD at 13 months and had a difficult time and ended up nursing after nothing for 5 days. She was not sure if there was milk, but her DD was happy to nurse! so my guess is that you would not be completely dried up.

I should add, I don't have a pump anymore. And even if I did, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get anything at this point (I only got a decent pump yield when I took massive quantities of herbs). So pumping will not play into this at all.

We breastfed until he self-weaned by 16 months. For the first 2 months after he turned a year, I still pumped at work - but when I realized he had dropped to just morning and night nursing, I stopped pumping. I just let him lead and nursed when he asked.

If I was going away overnight I might pump just once or twice incase LO isn't ready to give it up. Totally depends on your comfort level with it too!

I can;t speak for 3 days away. I would probably pump a couple of times in that situation...but once a week for work, i have to work late and get home after LO is in bed and so I don't nurse one evening per week and my supply is fine. We are on the morning and bedtime nursing routine for several months now. There was a phase too where i was sleeping in and DH would get up with LO and then after after having some water and fruit, he didn't want to nurse and so we would skip the morning session. that hasn't happened in a while now - but again my supply was never affected.

DD is 14.5 months and she usually asks to nurse 2x/day (a.m., and when I get home from work). DH and I are currently planning to go away by ourselves for a three-day weekend in September. I'm also trying to book a weekend away with friends in August. These will be my first overnights away from DD.

At this point I'm fine with DD continuing to nurse until she self-weans. I'm nervous about losing my supply and unintentionally weaning her.

Just wondering from others who've continued to nurse after one year, if you went away overnight without nursing/pumping, did you dry up, or did you still maintain some supply?
