try refined coconut oil, you still get the health benefits but with zero taste. DH doesn't like coconut flavored things either and has very sensitive tastebuds, but he can't taste the refined stuff.

I use the refined coconut oil for cooking since it doesn't have a coconut flavor.
I use the pure stuff for baking and everything else

I buy the brand I do specifically because it doesn't have the typical coconut oil flavour. I like that flavour if I'm baking with coconut oil, but hate it when I'm making something savoury.

ETA: This is the brand I use: http://www.omeganutrition.com/inventoryD.asp?item_no=COCCB016

I made popcorn with it once and DH won't let me use it for anything else because of the taste. My understanding is that if you get the refined variety it doesn't have the coconut smell/taste.

I use a high quality refined coconut oil that is processed without chemicals and there is no taste... I think there are less health benefits but it's still a good, healthy cooking oil.

So funny you posted this - was thinking all day yesterday that I'm trying to get on board with coconut oil but really feel like it ruins my food!! I made paleo "mashed potatoes" a couple of weeks ago with cauliflower and coconut oil and it was just... gross. I'll use butter next time. :)

I've only used it for pancakes so far. DH claims he can taste it but I think he only smells it when I'm heating it up. I don't notice the taste. I don't think I would like it in savory dishes.

It is strong to me. I like coconut though...good with sweet potatoes and sautéed green beans. Used it to grease the pan for a frittata and didn't like that i could taste it with that since it wasn't a complimentary flavor.

We hardly notice it anymore. We did at first, especially DH, but not anymore. I also don't put very much either... and not with every single dish. We do it for teriyaki stir-fry, orange chicken and omelettes (sometimes). I do love the taste with French Toast though, so I tend to put a little more then.

@mrbee: Thanks so much for posting this! I'm not a fan of coconut so this one question has been keeping me from trying it. I think I'll be staying away from it for cooking.

I tried cooking with coconut oil for a while, but could never get fully used to the taste. I do like it for certain sweet things though (like for roasting sweet potato -- amazing!). But for other things, I feel like the coconut taste (or maybe it's just the smell) is too strong.

We've used coconut oil to cook in the past, and the coconut flavor comes out SO strong!

Am I doing it wrong? If you cook with coconut oil, does the taste come out really strong - and you just like that taste? Or are you able to somehow mask the taste...
