If I had to go back I wouldn't go to college at all, as it's not a benefit where I live. Instead, I majored in Psychology for 2 years, then switched to Fine Arts. Got my BFA, then later went back to school for Interiors. Could have saved myself a good 4 years if I had just started there. I looked into going for the degree a few years ago, but I don't have nearly enough science credits to get into the program, so I'd pretty much be starting from scratch. Not something I was interested in doing at 32, certainly not with a child now. However, I know most of my instructors in school are MSN's, so maybe you can at least teach with a masters? The TEAS wasn't too terrible. It felt like an ACT/SAT test, though a little easier and heavier emphasis on science. I bought the book from the ATI website, studied from that exclusively and did okay. It had been a long time since I had to study for English and math! How was the TEAS? I'll definitely keep you updated! And I saw your reply about CRNAs. The two CRNA programs in my area are both doctorates. I have a friend that is a nurse in ICU, she was telling me that eventually they will do away with the Masters in nursing all together and require a doctorate. There are many reasons I chose it. In high school I actually wanted to be a doctor, but I ended up choosing family over that. I would have had to do it before a child so that was out. But I've had a heart for healthcare for awhile. I enjoy learning/knowing medical terminology, procedures and how the body works - I find it fascinating. I have thoroughly enjoyed my classes thus far. As for the actual career, it's not boring - that is huge to me. There will be something/someone different every day, a new challenge, something new to learn. Healthcare is a dynamic and ever-changing field that requires you stay on your toes. In addition, I love the flexibility. I can work night hours and be home to send my child off to school, sleep for the morning and be there when he gets home from school and not leave for work again until it's his bedtime. With the frequency of 12-hour shifts, I could work three nights a week and that's it for the week. There is a huge deficit of nurses, so they're in demand - especially those with BSN's, so the job market is great - this means the salary is rewarding and allows for tremendous growth. Many hospitals have great benefit pkgs, that was another draw and if I do end up taking out any loans, which I don't plan on, but never say never, there are student loan forgiveness programs for nurses. I wasn't sure if the CNM route required a doctorate now or not.. So probably just the CNP route. I think CRNA's are still just masters programs too. CRNA's make a butt load of money but I'm not sure I'd love the day to day on that one. That's a bummer about midwifery laws in MO change! They're pretty good here. @Blueberry: yikes! That's competitive. There was no set required GPA for my program, but they rank you and other applicants based on GPA of only four core classes and then the TEAS score (nursing prep exam). I know for sure no one with less than a 3.5 got in, and 75 seemed to be the minimum for TEAS. I do love nursing school but only four weeks in and already intense! I try to remember to enjoy it though too. I doubled in two difficult subjects (molecular biology and Russian), and I wasn't able to be an A student in both. I would have gotten far more out of either of them if I'd just picked one to focus on. And yet, the experiences I had in each were so, so valuable. No idea how one breaks into that field, but I have had the opportunity to work with people who benefited from people with that job. For example, I had a little girl in a wheelchair and it wasn't working for her needs and people came and jerry rigged it to be what she needed. I'm applying to a BSN program and when I met with the advisor, I was told that I needed to have at the very least a 3.8 in pre-reqs to even qualify to be "looked at". I do however get what they call a "bump" for already having a Bachelors degree. I intend on applying in the fall of 2015 to start in the fall of 2016. I'm baking baby #2 right now and I still have to wrap up Anatomy and Physiology II and Microbiology before I can apply. :) I'm applying to a public school and two private schools since I don't really have the option to move out of the city/state.
