I find with my kid getting really specific seems to help. Like if I just say, "I can't, I'm driving" he will keep whining. But if I say something like, "I'm using my hands for driving right now, but when I stop at a stop sign I can use my hands to get your whatever. Right now I am using my hands for driving, though" that goes a little better.

Then I make vroom vroom noises and he thinks that is funny.

If I can reach it, I give it to her. If not, she gets ignored, because what else can you do? I'm driving and it's not like I'm going to pull over every 3 min when she drops something. I also have a CD of children's music in the car that I play for her when she gets cranky. She loves it.

I find it easiest to ignore tantrums in the car since there is nothing I can do since I am driving. If DH is driving and I am in the front passenger side, sometimes I will try to reach for the item. But most of the time I just say, "I can't reach it. I'll give it to you when we get there." I think I've said it enough times that he knows that if something falls he's not getting it back until we reach our destination.

In the car I always say "I'm sorry you dropped your book. Mommy will get it when we stop." It happens so frequently that he seems to get it. When he's really upset I try to sing songs that he will do motions to or will sing with me (but only when I'm desperate because it's exhausting!)

Like PP, I try to explain to him I can't get to it because I'm driving and will get it when we stop later. If that doesn't work, I just ignore him because there's nothing I can do. Unless I pull over, get out, retrieve tossed item, hand it to him, get back into my seat, and drive off. Knowing him, he'll probably toss it again the moment I pull out. We are not playing that game!

I ignore her because I can't be dicking around while driving, especially on all the highways here. i used to hold her hand sometimes, but then she wanted it ALL THE TIME and would tantrum if i pulled my arm back. And i can't comfortably drive with one arm kinked back there like that.

That glass divider would also prevent shoes and food from being flung at me, LOL!

Yep, mainly because there's not really much else I can do! I find that it's actually easiest to ignore tantrums in the car and the stroller.

I ended up giving her the paci, unless I can't reach it. Otherwise, I ignore her.

I just tell her Mommy is driving, so I can't reach for XYZ right now. If she keeps crying then just turn up the music a little and ignore her.

Do you do the same in the car? The times I'm most inconsistent is in the car. Mostly she is upset because she has either dropped something like a book or soft toy that she wants or is just plain bored of sitting there. Sometimes I try and distract by talking to her about something else, sometimes I try and reach something else to give to her or other times I ignore her, after first telling her I'm busy and can't help her right now.

Anyway, it's not working because even a 5 minute journey ends with her whining!

Sometimes I feel like I need one of these...
