My pedi isn't big on wcm or any milk at all really. She told me a well balanced diet and multivitamin provides what they need. I do plan to offer almond milk, coconut or goat milk before wcm though.

@katsupgirl: K will eat those too - sometimes.

@heartonastring: Thanks for the link! Coconut tonic? huh - will have to look into that. Never heard of it before!

@Corduroy: That's good to hear your Ped is okay with this. I think ours is very mainstream. Are you giving Enfamil Vitamin D drops? No Iron? I am going to ask at our next week's appt.

@hilsy85: Thanks mama! Some feedings (during the day) are really just like 2-3 min. though. And she is a slooow eater, so I never know if she's getting enough of either these days.

@bpcmarj: Thanks for another boost of confidence! Are you just BFing morning and night?

@sorrycharlie: @JerricaBenton: Thanks!

@sorrycharlie: oh I didn't know you could give toddlers this age vitamins. I may look into that for Tor. Sometimes he will drink WCM but sometimes he won't and since I only nurse at night and hope to have him feeding less and less I would love other options.

LO is just over a year and I'm not planning on offering wcm to drink as long as we're still breastfeeding. She loves water and we bf 7 times a day. She's just started yogurt after growing out of her dairy sensitivity. We're trying cheese next. I feel like that's good!

@shopaholic: we just do water. I tried to offer her cow's milk and almond milk, she wouldn't touch either, and we tried for SIX months. in the end, the pedi wasn't concerned and said to just make sure she gets yogurt, cheese and a multivitamin (she gets half a flinstone toddler vitamin!)

P is 22 months and still doesn't drink milk. She is still BFing at least twice a day. She gets whole milk yogurt and cheese. Our ped at 18m appointment suggested fortified orange juice with calcium and vitamin D, so she literally just started drinking that this week. I don't worry about it and don't see a nutritional need for it!

My LO is 12 months and hasn't had dairy yet because of a potential allergy. I'm still pumping at work but that will end soon since I'm starting to travel a lot. We're going to introduce dairy in a week or so but I'm not sold on pushing a lot of milk. LO's pediatrician was concerned about Vitamins A & D and I've heard other concerns about calcium and iron.

For now LO is a good eater so I think with morning/evening BFing, Vitamin D drops, occasional liver and her regular diet she should be fine.

I see this is an old thread that's been revived, but this has been in my mind a lot lately so I might as well chime in.

I'm planning to wean, save for maybe one feed/day, by the time DD's a year old and I go back to work. I'm not really big on the idea of WCM though, so I'm considering alternatives.

I've pretty much narrowed it down to either organic goat's milk, or homemade almond milk or coconut tonic. It's my understand that storebought milk alternatives have little to offer nutritionally in comparison to homemade versions...I'm just not sure how much time I'll have to be making homemade milk all the time, hence my consideration of goat's milk.

Anyhow, I bookmarked this incredibly helpful link the other day and thought I'd pass it along for anyone else who's grappling with the same decision: http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/the-three-best-substitutes-for-a-child-allergic-to-milk/

I just weaned my daughter at 23 months. She pretty much stopped taking a bottle around 6 months so from that point on, it was just straight from the tap :P When she was around 13 months old, I started offering her whole cow's milk from a cup, but she would take a sip and then refuse. I did try to offer milk daily, because I was worried she wasn't getting enough milk just from nursing, but I was lucky if she drank maybe an ounce or two a day.

She started to like milk more when she was around 1.5 years old. I just kept offering everyday, even if she wouldn't drink it. Now at 23 months, she drinks about a cup of milk a day, along with Pediasure to get some extra calories in her.

I'm not planning on introducing WCM at all, we'll continue to breastfeed and I'll offer her almond milk as a supplement. If I do give her animal milk in the future it will probably be sheep's milk (when she's 2-3).

I'm not entirely comfortable with soy milk so until I've seen some positive research on it, I'll probably avoid unfermented soy as well.

I hope to keep BF, but even if I don't we don't plan on introducing WCM, because neither my husband or I drink it. I'll find a high fat alternative like hemp milk or soymilk etc. plus other dairy like whole yogurt.

IMHO the only reason to give WCM is if you can't or don't want to BF. Seeing as I SAH it seemed like a no brainer to just BF until 2. LO occasionally drinks milk but I don't worry about it being a regular thing.

I'm still nursing À at 14 months, I give her WCM in porridge but she's not interested in drinking it. Goat milk was my preference instead of cow, and I got her to tolerate it by watering it down and changing up the ratios every few days but even so, she wouldn't drink much. I have to wean next month so we'll see what happens.

We tried introducing WCM at 1 year, and LO hated it. I was still nursing 4-5x a day at that point, and he ate plenty of dairy. Now at 15 months, he will have maybe 1-2oz over the course of a day and still nurses 2x a day. I don't stress about it! As long as he continues to love cheese/yogurt, it's fine with me if he doesn't drink milk (and I'm happy to continue nursing 2x a day til 18 months).
