Love, love, love it! We started at 6 months and haven't looked back. The biggest thing for me was to remember "under 1, food is for fun!" Some meals DD only eats a few bites, but most times she completely baffles us with how much she will eat. It's nice to not have to prepare separate meals for her since she is eating everything we eat, within reason. She's 10 months now and we can take her anywhere to eat with us and don't have to worry about bringing along special food for her!
One other thing we found was that we are eating a lot healthier these days, since we are more conscientious of preparing balanced, low sodium meals with healthy fats!

@lucy123: this was what we did. We started with purées at 6 months but he quickly wanted other stuff so we let him eat other stuff . By 9 months he didn't want anything to do with purées, (except if they were in a pouch that he could feed himself). At 15 months he is a good little, messy eater that likes to use a fork and spoon.

We love it! DS is an amazing eater, he loves everything and loves feeding himself. I love watching him chew, it's super easy, doesn't require much planning ahead etc.

As a general rule I feed him whatever we're having plus an extra veggie (like steamed carrots or cauliflower).

Honestly, we just followed her cues. Started purees a little before 6 months but followed her cues after. By 8 months she wanted everything on our plates and at 11 months self feeds pretty much every meal. Don't sell yourself on a method but figure out what is best for your baby!

We absolutely loved it. She was so competent at feeding herself very early on, I never had to gobble down my own dinner to feed her or let mine go cold so I could feed her - we all ate at the same time. The only frustrating thing was that a lot went on the floor, she would take a bite, throw it, get another piece and do the same again etc. But anyway, we loved it and she's a great eater now.

We do a combo of BLW and mashed up stuff spoon-fed (never did real purees) and it has worked out pretty well so far. She is almost 9 months now and loves to feed herself, but she still does fine being spoon fed at daycare. She has gagged and thrown up a few times, which I don't think I'll ever get used to. But I'm hoping it won't happen too many more times.

So far she eats pretty much anything we give her, and does great with a variety of textures.

I liked it a lot. We tried to start at 6 months but that didn't go well... lots of gagging which I know is fine but DH and my mom (his caregiver when we are at work) would not have any of it so I pushed it back till 10 months. He was still gagging a tiny bit for a day or two but then finally figured it out and has been great since.

We get complimented all the time about him being able to eat by himself at a young age (before 1) which I didn't think was that impressive till people tell me they still have to spoon feed their 3 year old.

He is now almost 28 months old and eats pretty much everything... except for shell fish... shell gives him a rash probably got it from me and my food allergies, I'm also allergic to peanuts but he seems fine with that. Go figure. :)

Oh, and she are just about anything until 13 months or so. At 14 months she is definitely becoming a little picky, but if she's hungry enough she will eat anything still. Not crazy about plain veggies, but meh- me neither.

We tried to start with it but it was frustrating for her! So we did a few soft things, banana, avocado, sweet potato. Then did some purees for about a month. Once she had a little more dexterity with her hands, she was into it and it went well. I guess we could have waited until 7 months to do solids all together, but we were excited! All in all, I was very happy with how it went.

Yes! It took awhile for him to get the hang of it, though, so don't get too discouraged. Certain things he would make the funniest faces and throw across the room, but he'd love them later once he figured out how to chew or gum it. He only "sort of" choked/gagged once. Now we feed him off our plates...the problem is his pickiness!

We accidentally did BLW. By that, I mean I made a freezer full of all different purées with spices and multiple combos, and LO refused to eat them. The only success we have had with solids came after she started eating off of our plates and feeding herself.

I love that she loves food, and we can take her anywhere because I know that she will eat what we are eating. But it's crazy messy, gagging freaked me out for the first little while, and I have to share all of my food!

Loved it! Started just shy of 6 months. LO has self fed for a long time now and it's wonderfully but messy (which I don't mind). He's even already using a spoon and fork now at 14 months! I think it led to good eating habits, and also independence.

We started with Weston A. Price BLW and LO reacted to the first two foods I gave her (avocado & egg yolk). LO's pediatrician was not impressed with me and asked me to stick to Gerber-type foods for a while after that. We still did a lot of BLW but stuck to foods found in baby food products (carrots, sweet potatoes, apples, bananas, steak, chicken, turkey, rice). LO had purees at daycare. She seemed to like both styles but probably consumed more calories from purees.

Now that she's 16 months and getting pickier we're doing more porridge-type meals with veggies and meat blended into oats or rice and eaten from a spoon.

We did and had a slow go of it. I didn't push too much because I was still breast feeding. It was also pretty easy in restaurants and I only ever traveled with Cheerios or cut up fruit.

My mom wasn't as comfortable with it while watching her and I was more comfortable when DH was around because he knew what to do if she actually choked.

I will say that the gagging in the beginning is super scary and it took some time for me not to complete panic.

All in all I loved it and would do it again.

Yes! I love watching her eat, she has great hand eye coordination, will try anything, and eats such a range of flavors and textures. I don't really enjoy spoon feeding her but I love eating with her.

Downside: she is so messy and it can be harder when we are out and about. But mostly the mess.

At 11 months we are eating mostly the same things now, with some modifications. I love it.
