@Mae: I'm so glad you asked this - we are starting at the end of the month, too. Thanks for all the great advice. I'm so excited - I think it's going to be a lot of fun!

I did not follow the 3 day rule. Avocado, banana, chicken on the bone...well, you saw the photos :)

avocado, steamed carrots/broccoli/sweet potato. Basically whatever they say the best first foods are. She wouldn't eat anything but carbs (pancakes, waffles, etc.) for the first few weeks. Now, at 8 months she eats anything and everything we put in front of her!

Definitely didn't abide by the 3 day rule. We have no reason to believe she'd have any allergies, and it's just not really that convenient to do (same reason we don't do purees - it's way more work!)

Avocado, banana, steamed zuc, steamed squash, and steamed carrots.

And breadsticks (but she stole those)

We don't season unless we're eating it too, and then it's with salt and pepper. She likes it both ways. And we didn't really wait the whole 3 days thing. There are no family allergies, so we don't worry about it. She's sensitive to tomatoes, but that's it.

@Mae: I started simple, like cinnamon or maybe a touch of pumpkin pie spice on his sweet potatoes and apples. I season his zucchini and squash with Italian seasoning mix, black pepper on potato wedges, etc. Now that he's 17 months old and snatches food off my plate, we've figured out that he likes cayenne pepper, chili powder, all the spices! :silly:

We didn't follow the 3 day rule. Some things she has tried (whether she liked it or not) the past few weeks were: roasted sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, bananas, apples, oatmeal, yogurt, cheese, pasta with sauce, toast, french toast, scrambled eggs, green beans, peas. She pretty much eats what LO1 eats.

@yoursilverlining: @Boheme: what types of spices do you use on stuff? I assume cinnamon on apples or sweet potatoes.. but I don't cook with a ton of spices so I don't know what else to put on what!

@cmomma17: how do you make oatmeal squares? I love oatmeal so I'd love to give it to her but wasn't sure how to without a spoon!

We started with avocado, sweet potatoes, cooked apple slices and butternut squash. Cube avocado into chunks, not slices (slices are very hard to pick up and stick to the tray, cubes work just fine). The squash and sweet potatoes we either roasted or sautéed in butter until tender. Apples were cooked in butter and topped with a little cinnamon. Peas are obviously super easy to do too.

We didn’t follow the 3 day rule.

Don’t be afraid of spices. No one enjoys super bland food; even babies!

I introduce one new food at a time and always in the morning so I can watch him throughout the day. I haven't followed the three day rule. Although at first I kinda did but I'm feeling more confident now.

I do some fruits in the mesh feeder which I like but is a huge PITA to clean.

Sweet potato fries are a big hit over here.

@Boheme: omg the crockpot. I have got to try that bc I keep ruining food when I try to steam it. Do you add water?

@Mae: I did banana, avocado and sweet potato, followed by oatmeal. I did do just one new food at a time for a couple days in a row before introducing a new food (I was probably overly cautious). Banana we mashed or offered a big chunk, avocado mashed, sweet potato mashed or in cubes (was baked so it was soft). Oatmeal I did as "oatmeal fingers/squares" so LO could hold them.

Good luck!

Avocado, bananas, roasted sweet potato wedges, baby carrot sticks cooked in the crock pot. We just cut all fruits and veggies into sticks or wedges. He also liked tender meat, like pot roast. I didn't follow the 3 day rule since we don't have any family history of food allergies, but I gave stuff like eggs separately at first.
BLW was a lot of fun!!

We started with avocado sliced, baked sweet potato rounds, steamed squash sticks, and banana slices. With the avocado, a good tip for younger babies is to leave a little bit of the skin on the slice so they can get it up to their mouth! You just have to watch they don't eat the skin :)

We followed the 3 day rule for the first few weeks and only do it now for foods that we know might trigger an allergy (eggs!).

What were some of the first foods you offered?

Did you follow the "rule" of only adding 1 new food every 3 days? (seems that would be hard with some actual "meal" type food that has multiple ingredients..)

Any tips on how to prepare food safely? What to dice v. cut into fingers v. offer whole?

Staring in 1.5 weeks!!! :)
