We never sleep trained but also never regularly co-slept and he went to STTN at 10.5m. I still don't know what caused him to drop the night feed.

We also tried sleep training and it didn't work for us. DS ended up STTN on his own at 9 months which also coincided with his learning to walk. I think he just had too much energy to STTN until that point :)

We tried sleep training but it didn't work for us. After that, I just dealt with my son's 3+ night wake ups. It was not fun at all, but that's how he was. He finally STTN on his own just after his first birthday. He's now 3 and the only times he wakes up are when he is sick.

LO is 16 months, and we are still waiting for it with no signs of STTN yet. We still have 3-5 nursing sessions per night most nights, as well, and nursing to sleep.

@Zbug: lol my DH tries! He was raised in a pretty non-AP family, whereas my mom was AP before AP was a thing lol. My sibling is pretty attached to my mom still and DH worries sometimes that AP is why... But it's more that they just genuinely like each other as people and have common interests (sports, concerts, etc.) lol.

@swedishfish: amazing. Maybe the (currently hypothetical) future #2 will be a good sleeper.

He's 1 and sttn sporadically. We are trying to move him to a floor bed from our bed. It's actually decreased his wake ups from several to 1/2.

I'm more of an attachment parent that I imagined I'd be as well :)

We never had to really sleep train. We did some gentle techniques like not responding for 5-10 mins at night to encourage him to go back to sleep on his own starting around 4/5 months. He started sttn occasionally then and consistently around 9 months.

@MoonMoon: I was worried about this too, but I've read some stuff about how babies aren't really biologically meant to sleep for long chunks of time, waking up frequently to nurse is actually quite common, etc. Just hoping all if that is right! My LO doesn't wake up tired and seems happy and healthy. I'm the one with bags under my eyes haha.

At 10.5 months, he sleeps with us in bed, and nurses anywhere from 3-6x a night. But he usually doesn't cry or really wake up, so I don't consider this bad (of course I might be insane!). I do wonder if this is bad for his development, and if co-sleeping is keeping him from having deep enough sleep, but DH and I have agreed we won't worry too much until after his 1st birthday.

We hit a rough patch at around 6-7 months and I started bedsharing from the first wakeup and nursing to sleep pretty much exclusively. LO started occasionally self-settling to bed at around 13-14 months and had a stretch of very settled sleep from 15-16 months (almost STTN and some self-settling) but had a wee regression after we came home from holiday at 16.5 months.

Miss A is now eighteen months and will happily self-settle to sleep 50% of the time and she seems to be moving back in the direction of STTN.

@mrs. wagon: so maybe, just maybe, I will see more improvement in a month!

@Rockies11: I will check out the book - thanks! I think you're probably right about the nursing and cosleeping. DD just sleeps so much better in our bed. The crib has been a big fail. I'm really okay nursing her twice a night. It's just the nights that she seems to toss and turn all night that make me insane.

Mine is 9.5 months and still nurses a couple of times a night, but no real wake-ups. I think with co-sleeping/nursing, they do wake-up and nurse more for much longer just because the milk is right there. Dr. Sears' Baby Sleep Book has some tips for night weaning a co-sleeping nursling.

We never sleep trained LMW and her sleep was awful until 4 months. Then she was down to 1-2 night wakings during which she'd get a bottle and go right back to sleep. At around 6 months she slept through the night on her own a few times then went back to 1 night waking a night. At around 8 months she started sleeping through the night consistently which stuck.

Then at 19 months she had a sleep regression and it is a LOT harder to sleep train a toddler than an infant...!!! Oh my goodness. But after a few weeks she's good now thank God.

We have pretty much decided sleep training is not for us. I'm apparently way more of an attachment parent than I thought I was and love cosleeping (for now, at least). LO is almost 7 months and wakes up to nurse 2+ times a night. I'm fine with twice a night, but the 3+ nights are a bit rough! She's doing much better than she was a few weeks ago though (months 5-6 sucked), but I'm curious what's to come. I know it's different for each baby, but what did your baby's sleep look like if you didn't sleep train?
